1 POLISH MUNICIPAL REVENUE STAMPS May 2014 Volume XLVIII No. 9 On April 17th, Robert Zacharias presented a Power Point presentation on the Municipal Revenue Stamps of Poland. A revenue stamp is a stamp that shows that a tax or a fee for government service has been (pre) paid. The audience in attendance had an interesting time trying to translate the Polish wording and the use of the stamps. Here are samples of the Revenue stamps and a breakdown of their usage. Gm(ina) Aleksandrów = Municipality of Aleksandrów. Opłaty kancelaryjne = Chancellery taxes. Zarząd gminy Babic = Municipal authority of Babice. Opłata administracyjna = Administration tax. Any form of exchange, purchase/sale, etc. would be possible. I collect the four single stamps from water activated sheets of Canadian stamps. (no booklet, mini/ souvenir sheets). Of course the stamps need both side selvages attached. I am seeking used stamps and with inscription data on the selvage. While I already have many of the issues getting all four corners is a challenge and so there are still lots of spaces to fill. WANTED George Green is looking for one (1) perfin from countries with names beginning with: K, O, W, X, Y, Z see him at any meeting ISLE OF MAN BEGINS SERIES ON WWI The Isle of Man and The Royal British Legion have joined together to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WW I with an impressive Trench Warfare issue. Perhaps best known for its yearly Poppy Appeal and Remembrance services, the Royal British Legion promotes the welfare and interests of current and former members of the British Armed Forces. Due to be released on February 19, the issue includes a set of six singles, a souvenir sheet and two presentation packs and First Day Covers. It is the first in a four year series that will continue through The mint stamps are issued in sheets of seven with a label bearing the words of Rupert Brooke, Safe, Though All Safety s Lost. Brooke was a young British poet who died from an infected mosquito bite while serving with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Shown are the stamps showing black and white images alongside the Royal British Legion poppy. The six images used in this issue reflect and depict life in the trenches communications, war horses, sappers that dug tunnels under the trenches, the trenches themselves, the officers dugout and Christmas truce. The auction will be held at the second meeting and the program will take place at the first meeting. We are still looking for volunteers for the show in May. See Dianne Malinoski and sign up. There will be a show committee meeting next Thurs. April 10, 808 Polson Ave, at 7.00 p.m. There are a few posters here for the show. There will be more made available at the next meeting. The Winnipeg Art Gallery sale of stamps will take place Friday April 11, from 11 am to 9 pm, Saturday, April 12, 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday, April 13, 11 am to 4 pm. The Red River Bourse will take place Sunday April 13 from am to 4 pm. Next month it will be held May 10 and then June 14, at the Best Western Charterhouse Hotel. Robert Zacharias has the exhibiting forms for the show. There will be an auction held by the SCC next week. All are welcome. There is still a lot missing from last month s auction. Bernie Smith gave an excellent presentation on Mourning Cover and some of the formalized homage rituals Victorian era people followed. 7 In recent months I have been corresponding with Peter Wood. Peter is a volunteer archivist with the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation Library. I am scanning almost 100 old Philatopic Monthly journals from 1940 to 1952 as put out by the Empire Stamp Company here in Toronto. The attachment is from Vol. 4 No. 5 of the August/September 1943 issue. I don t get much time to read any but found this tidbit interesting.
