1 Chapter : NATIONAL SURVEY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT (NSSE) Who takes it? All freshmen and seniors are requested to complete the survey. In, participated in the NSSE. pilot so half of our students were asked to complete the NSSE and the other half were asked to complete the NSSE. pilot. The pilot results are unavailable for public distribution. When is it administered? In the Spring. How long does it take for the students to complete the instrument? 5 minutes. What office administers it? NSSE personnel administer it online with campus coordination by the Provost s Office. Who originates this survey? Late summer. What type of information is sought? NSSE attempts to measure levels of student engagement. Spring NSSE participants answered questions in five sections: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interactions, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment. A copy of the survey is available at From whom are the results available? The Provost s Office. To whom are the results regularly distributed? The University community through a website, the University Conference, Undergraduate Council, the summer Strategic Planning and Assessment Workshop, and through this Almanac.

2 Are the results available by department or discipline? No. Are the results comparable to data of other universities? Yes.

3 Selected Results and Interpretation Assembled by Marty Eisenberg October With the administration, NSSE allowed us to choose our comparison groups. Our comparison groups were. Schools. Private National Liberal Arts College. These were schools identified by US News and World Report as being national liberal arts colleges who administered NSSE in. Seventy-five schools met this definition. The group includes a wide variety of schools with differing amounts of resources... The 545 schools that administered NSSE in. Our sample size was smaller in because we also participated in the pilot for NSSE.. Half of our students completed the traditional NSSE ad half completed the pilot for NSSE.. Some observations In comparison with private national liberal arts colleges, first-year students report less academic challenge, less student-faculty interaction and similar enriching-educational experiences and supportive campus environment. freshmen report more similar experiences with private national liberal arts colleges in than they did in. In comparison with private national liberal arts colleges, senior students report less academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, and a similar supportive campus environment. They report more enriching education experiences. Looking at the results, the responses suggest that the experience for seniors is becoming less similar to the experience at private national liberal arts colleges. In comparison with schools, both freshmen and seniors report more academic challenge, more active and collaborative learning, more student-faculty interaction, more enriching educational experiences, and a more supportive campus environment. students report Spending more time preparing for class Spending more time on co-curricular activities About the same time relaxing and socializing

15 Interpreting the Mean Comparisons Report Sample The Mean Comparisons report is based on information from all randomly selected or censusadministered students for both your institution and your comparison institutions. Targeted and locally administered oversamples and other non-randomly selected students are not Variables included. The items from the NSSE survey appear in the left column in the same order and wording as they appear on the instrument. The name of each variable appears in the second column for easy reference to your data file and the summary statistics at the end of this section. Response options are also provided to help you interpret the statistics. Benchmark Items that make up the five Benchmarks of ive Educational Practice are indicated by the following: LAC=Level of Academic Challenge ACL=Active and Collaborative Learning SFI=Student-Faculty Interaction EEE=Enriching Educational Experiences a. The smaller the significance level, the smaller the likelihood that the difference is due to chance. Statistical significance does not guarantee the result is substantive or important. Large sample sizes (like those produced by NSSE) tend to generate more statistically significant results even though the magnitude of mean differences may be inconsequential.
