1 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL ADVISORS - OMAHA NOVEMBER 2010 Advocacy and Your Bottom-Line on Tap for Nov. 16 Luncheon The marketplace in which you sell, the products and services you can offer, and the benefits and value you can provide to clients all depend on lawmakers and regulators. Every week of the year, decisions are being made on both federal and state levels that affect your ability to earn a living and impact the financial security of your clients. NAIFA-Omaha members will benefit from our Nov. 16 program by gaining a better understanding of the legislative and regulatory environment in which insurance and financial professionals operate. They will learn the significant threats that are being proposed that would diminish or eliminate the tax advantages of the products they offer to their clients, and the effectiveness of NAIFA s Advocacy and Political Programs in protection of the agent s financial and career interests, as well as those of their clients they serve. Our speaker will be Terry Headley, LUTCF, LIC, FSS, president of Headley Financial Group. A member of NAIFA- Omaha, Terry was elected as NAIFA s national president at the 2010 NAIFA Career Conference and Annual Meeting, held in September in Seattle, Washington. Terry entered the insurance business in January 1973 at age 19, and is the youngest agent ever inducted into the Principal Financial Group s Hall of Fame. Terry is a Qualifying and Life Member of MDRT and consistent Court of the Table Qualifier. He has held every office in NAIFA- Omaha and NAIFA-Nebraska State. He was inducted into the NAIFA-Omaha Hall of Fame and has received the NAIFA- Nebraska Distinguished Service Award. Terry served three years each as the Chair of the NAIFA Committee on Public Relations, Member of NAIFA Committee on Governance, and the Chair EVENT DETAILS Date: Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010 Time: Buffet Opens 11 a.m. Program: 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Location: Champions Run Country Club Eagle Run Drive Omaha, NE Speaker: Terry Headley, LUTCF, LIC, FSS Topic: The Direct Connection Between Advocacy and Your Bottom-Line Cost: NAIFA-Omaha Members No Charge Guests $20 Sponsored By: of the National IFAPAC Subcommittee. He was first elected to the NAIFA Board of Trustees in 2004 and re-elected in 2006, and then was elected to the position of national secretary in Additionally, he was the first Capitol Club IFAPAC Contributor ($5,000/annual) and is currently the largest IFAPAC contributor in the history of the NAIFA Federation. The Nov. 16 meeting is sponsored by Wiig-Codr Underwriters. NAIFA President Terry Headley s Inauguration Address You will find NAIFA President Terry Headley s inauguration address on YouTube at the following link through the NAIFA website: index.html then go to Watch Videos for many of the other events in Seattle at the NAIFA conference. Orientation Meeting for New and Prospective Members Prior to the luncheon meeting on Nov. 16, NAIFA-Omaha will hold an Orientation Meeting for new and prospective members (and their mentors) from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Champions Run Country Club. NAIFA-Omaha board members will conduct the meeting. They will provide attendees with information about NAIFA member benefits and helpful tips on how to build a successful career in insurance and financial services. Cash Jackpot Up to $375! We didn t have a winner at the October luncheon, so we ve added another $25 to the jackpot and will try again on Nov. 16. ALL current NAIFA- Omaha members are eligible to win this drawing, which concludes our monthly membership luncheon. But you must be present to win! It s just one more great reason to attend NAIFA-Omaha luncheons!

2 Benefits of Being a NAIFA Member A Message From NAIFA-Omaha President Mark Scott, LUTCF, FSS One benefit of being a member of NAIFA is each month I can count on receiving the national Advisor Today magazine. With each issue I get a valuable perspective of what s going on in the industry with New Products (page 10 of the October issue), Practice Specialties (pages 12-22) and a Product Spotlight (pages 24-26). If you ve read that far, I m confident you ve found something related to your practice that can help you in one fashion or another. If you keep reading, you re likely to find even more, as that is less than half the content available. The article I found the most interesting in October was the Viewpoint on page 8, appropriately titled What Has NAIFA Done For Me Lately? It is authored by the NAIFA National President, our very own Terry Headley. If you are a dues-paying member and haven t read it yet, it s a must read. Then you simply continue to update yourself on the following pages mentioned above. By the way, if you can t find your copy, no problem! You can always view issues of Advisor Today online at It s all worth what you pay in dues, and more! THE ADVISOR PAGE 2

8 NAIFA-Nebraska Advocacy Highlights Here are recent reminders of NAIFA s advocacy efforts with Congress and federal regulators. NAIFA has: Preserved a role for agents in selling health insurance. Original legislation in Congress this spring would have eliminated any role for agents in the sale of health insurance. Defeated a Senate attempt to subject all broker-dealers and their registered representatives to all the requirements of the Investment Advisers Act, including fiduciary duty standards. NAIFA is now lobbying the Securities Exchange Commission to avoid unfair and unnecessary imposition of fiduciary standards on registered representatives. Defeated a Senate amendment that would have made financial planning a recognized profession and would have subjected all financial planners to new layers of regulation. Gained an exemption for all insurance products and most securities products from the new U.S. Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection. Prevented the U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services from being able to set all agent commissions on health insurance products. Prevented the inclusion of federal health insurance program in the health insurance reform bill that was passed this spring and gained the authority for states to create their own health insurance exchanges. At the State level, NAIFA-Nebraska: Is actively engaged with legislative committees and the Department of Insurance as they start to address the state legislative and administrative changes that will be required for implementing health insurance exchanges. NAIFA-NE will be a leading advocate for the role of the agent and consumer choice. Has met with the Governor to provide input on the selection of the State s new Director of Insurance (Ann Frohman left that position at the end of October). Held an insurance roundtable discussion with the Governor on Oct. 26 in Omaha, providing a private audience just for NAIFA-NE leaders and Gov. Heineman. THE ADVISOR PAGE 8
