3 Intrductin t the FRCEM Examinatin Structure applicable frm August 2016 Frm August 2016 the Cllege is intrducing a new suite f examinatins, mapped t the Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum. Success in all cmpnents leads t the award f Fellwship by Examinatin (FRCEM). The changes t the examinatin structure will be phased in during a tw year perid t permit trainees and ther candidates the pprtunity t cmplete the existing suite f examinatins. Frm August 2016, the Fellwship examinatin will cnsist f the fllwing cmpnents: FRCEM Primary Examinatin FRCEM Intermediate Certificate: Shrt Answer Questin Paper Situatinal Judgement Paper (intrduced frm Autumn 2017) FRCEM Final Examinatin: Critical Appraisal (Shrt Answer Questin Paper) Clinical Tpic Review (with viva) Management Viva Clinical Shrt Answer Questin Paper Objective Structured Clinical Examinatin (OSCE) Frm August 2018, the Fellwship examinatin will cnsist f the fllwing cmpnents: FRCEM Primary Examinatin FRCEM Intermediate Certificate: Shrt Answer Questin Paper Situatinal Judgement Paper FRCEM Final Examinatin: Critical Appraisal (Shrt Answer Questin Paper) Quality Imprvement Prject (QIP) Clinical Shrt Answer Questin Paper Objective Structured Clinical Examinatin (OSCE) The Cllege cntinues t ffer Membership by Examinatin (MRCEM) fr candidates wh have passed all f the fllwing examinatins: FRCEM Primary (r MRCEM Part A between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016 r granted exemptin) FRCEM Intermediate SAQ (r MRCEM Part B between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016) MRCEM OSCE (previusly called Part C. 4 Examinatin Regulatins 1. Applicatins fr each cmpnent f the FRCEM examinatin shuld be submitted via the nline applicatin system, available via the Examinatins Sectin f the Cllege Website. 2. Applicatins may nly be submitted during a specified time perid ( the applicatin windw ). The date n which the applicatin windw pens (pening date) and clses fr receipt f applicatins (the clsing date) is published n the Examinatins Sectin f the Cllege Website. 3. Cmpleted applicatins must be submitted by 17:00 (GMT) n the published clsing date after which time the system autmatically clses. Partially cmpleted r late applicatins will nt be accepted. 4. Candidates in a GMC apprved, UK training prgramme, must be registered r enrlled with the Cllege and have paid the apprpriate trainee administratin fee/s. 5. It is a candidate s respnsibility t ensure they have all the infrmatin required t cmplete the entire applicatin frm prir t the applicatin windw clsing n the advertised date at 17:00 (GMT). 6. Upn submissin f a cmpleted applicatin, candidates will receive an autmated cnfirming receipt f the applicatin. Detailed written instructins cnfirming the exact date, timetable fr, and lcatin f the examinatin will be ed individually t all candidates nce the final allcatin f examinatin spaces is cnfirmed, apprximately fur weeks prir t the examinatin. 7. Candidates wishing t withdraw r transfer their examinatin entry must ntify the Examinatins Department in writing by 17:00 (GMT) n the clsing date. Fees cannt be transferred r refunded after this time. 8. Candidates must apply fr any required entry visas in gd time prir t the date f the examinatin. In exceptinal circumstances, subject t receipt f written dcumentatin cnfirming the refusal f a visa, the Examinatins Manager r Directr f Educatin will cnsider requests fr candidates t transfer their examinatin entry. 9. Candidates wh d nt attend an examinatin will frfeit their examinatin fee. In exceptinal circumstances, fr matters beynd the candidate s cntrl, the Directr f Educatin will cnsider requests t transfer a candidate s entry t the next diet, subject t receipt f written dcumentatin (e.g a detailed medical certificate, a death certificate fr a direct family member). Please nte that insufficient preparatin is nt cnsidered a sufficient reasn t transfer an examinatin entry. 10. Candidates will be infrmed f the date n which examinatin results will be published at the time their examinatin entry is cnfirmed. In very exceptinal circumstances this may be amended by the Cllege and due ntice will be published n the Cllege website. 11. Results will be published n the Cllege website. Result letters and feedback will be psted t candidates within fur weeks f the publicatin f results. Examinatin results will nt be issued r cnfirmed by telephne r . 4

5 Intrductin t the FRCEM Primary The FRCEM Primary examinatin is mapped t the Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum with mre detailed infrmatin prvided in the RCEM Basic Sciences Curriculum (June 2010) which is available n the 2015 Curriculum page f ur website. All applicants fr the FRCEM Primary examinatin are strngly advised t familiarise themselves with the Basic Sciences Curriculum in preparatin fr sitting the FRCEM Primary examinatin. Candidates in the UK Fundatin Prgramme may chse t sit the FRCEM Primary examinatin during Fundatin Year 1. Hwever, candidates sitting the FRCEM Primary examinatin befre entry t a GMC apprved Emergency Medicine training prgramme shuld nte that a pass in this examinatin will nt cunt twards CCT if it is taken ut f training unless the candidate enters r re-enters the training prgramme within 7 years f passing the examinatin. FRCEM Primary Eligibility Criteria A candidate will be eligible t enter the FRCEM Primary examinatin prvided he/she hlds a medical qualificatin apprved by the General Medical Cuncil (GMC) fr the purpses f registratin. Candidates wh are registered with the GMC shuld include their registratin number in the apprpriate place n the applicatin frm. If yu are registered r anticipate being registered with the GMC then yur persnal data, including yur examinatin results, will be passed t the GMC fr quality assurance and research purpses and t facilitate the awarding f certificates fr cmpletin f training (CCTs). Candidates registered with the Irish Medical Cuncil (IMC) r an internatinal medical cuncil are required t uplad a cpy f their current medical registratin dcument at the time f applicatin. Oversubscriptin Criteria There is nrmally n restrictin n the number f places available fr the FRCEM Primary examinatin but candidates may nt always be allcated their first chice f venue. 5

6 Exemptins and equivalent examinatins MRCEM Part A MRCEM Part A passes btained prir t August 2012 are deemed time expired. Candidates wh sat the MRCEM Part A prir t August 2012 are therefre required t pass the FRCEM Primary examinatin in rder t sit further FRCEM examinatins. Candidates wh passed the MRCEM Part A examinatin after 1 August 2012 are deemed t have passed an equivalent examinatin t the FRCEM Primary examinatin. MRCS r MRCSI Trainees wh are enrlled n the Defined Rute f Entry int Emergency Medicine (DRE-EM) prgramme and btained MRCS r MRCSI after 1 January 2012 are exempt frm the FRCEM Primary examinatin. Such trainees are required t submit the FRCEM Primary Exemptin frm, available n the website, and a cpy f their MRCS r MRCSI certificate t the Examinatin Department at least 6 weeks prir t applying fr the FRCEM Intermediate Certificate examinatins in rder t btain exemptin frm the FRCEM Primary. Number f attempts and currency Candidates are permitted a maximum f six attempts in which t pass the FRCEM Primary Examinatin. Previus attempts at the MRCEM Part A examinatin prir t August 2016 d nt cunt twards the number f available attempts. In exceptinal circumstances candidates may apply fr apprval fr an additinal examinatin attempt. Such cases will be dealt with n a case by case basis at the discretin f the Dean, whse decisin is final. A pass in the FRCEM Primary examinatin will remain current. If at sme future date it becmes necessary t replace it, hlders f the FRCEM Primary examinatin will be given a minimum f 24 mnths ntice f the date frm which it will be deemed time expired. 6

7 Structure and Cntent f the FRCEM Primary The FRCEM Primary examinatin will cnsist f a 3 hur, multiple chice questin (MCQ) paper f 180, single best answer questins (SBAQ). The examinatin is cnducted in English and candidates are advised that IELTS Level 7 is the expected standard fr cmpletin f the FRCEM examinatins. The FRCEM Primary examinatin results will be published n a pre-advised day apprximately three weeks after the date f the examinatin. Result letters and feedback will be psted t candidates within fur weeks f the publicatin f results. Examinatin results will nt be issued r cnfirmed by telephne r . 7

8 Guidance fr Candidates with Additinal Requirements The Cllege recgnises that sme candidates may require reasnable adjustments when undertaking examinatins. The respnsibility fr requesting reasnable adjustments lies with the candidate. Any candidate wh wishes t request reasnable adjustments must indicate the requirements at the time f applicatin. Candidates must prvide a reprt frm a relevant prfessinal utlining their specific needs and the adjustments required. Each request will be assessed by the Cllege n its wn merit. Candidates will be ntified in writing f the utcme f their applicatin fr reasnable adjustments and f the arrangements that will be made t meet their needs. 8
