1 Bama News News from your Alabama Chapter Volume 5, Issue 1 A Message from the President Dear AL NATP Members, This is an ever-changing industry; this industry we have chosen as our profession is extremely challenging. This year, more than anything, we need each other and all the education we can possibly get to stay up do date. Let your AL NATP Chapter help you anyway we can. I know for myself that being able to reach out to my fellow AL NATP members has always been a plus. Your AL NATP Board has been working diligently to make this Chapter the best. We are all in this together. We need to collaborate to face these challenges and grow our businesses. As this newsletter goes out, we have approval and are now taking registrations for our Spring Fling May 5 8, Your education committee is also working on our Annual meeting for November 2019, which is also our 25 th Anniversary as AL NATP Chapter. As this tax season kicks into high gear, remember that: you receive ONE free NATP research question with your paid membership; and if you run into any problems or even just need an ear for a sounding board, all you need to do is reach out your AL NATP Board is here to help or we can help find where you can turn for help. My staff and I have traveled a rocky road, but we are hoping and praying for smooth sailing soon. Spring Fling 2019 registration is open! Hotel reservation can be made via the link on our AL NATP Education webpage or by calling directly the Hampton Inn Orange Beach, AL at using Discount Code TAX. Sleeping room discounts begin on Friday before conference and ends on Saturday after conference (May 3 thru 11, 2019) with the nightly rate depending on your beach view. Please note that weekend rates are slightly higher. We will be once again providing all registered attendees with pdfs of the material 7-10 days prior to conference OR you can purchase printed materials for a nominal fee of $35 with registration. 3 Spring Fling Instructor Kathryn Keane Kathryn is the principal tax professional at Macánta Corporation, a small family owned tax and related services practice located in Brooklyn, NY, serving over 850 individual clients and 50 businesses. Kathryn served two 3-year terms on the National Board of Directors of NATP. Kathryn is the only person in the history of NATP to be awarded Chapter Person of the Year three times. In 2002, 2008 and in 2015 recognizing her volunteer service to the community at large as well as to NATP. Currently the NY NATP Vice President, Kathryn is thrilled to be the Education Chair for the NY Chapter. In addition to serving on the Board of the NY Chapter of NATP, she currently serves as Chair of the IRS Triboro Practitioner Liaison Committee. Kathryn presents for NATP as part of its 1040 Update series, at their National Annual Conference and for NATP Chapters across the country. Kathryn has a B.S. degree from Brooklyn College and an authorized IRS Enrolled Agent] What is the SPRING FLING STONE LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP AUCTION? This Scholarship Fund was designed to help our members advance their careers in the tax business. We come together each May at our Spring Fling to have a good time networking and watching Ms. Nelda Bunch auction off items to add to the Scholarship Funds. During the Spring Fling, Ms. Nelda Bunch, the very first woman auctioneer in Alabama, hosts a charity auction to help those of us struggling to reach our aspirations. As someone who has attended more than my fair share of these events, it is an experience like no other. Ms. Nelda has the unique ability to grab your attention, loosen your wallet, and entertain to such a degree that you forget you are attending a tax seminar. NATP Members, please plan to join us on May 7, 2019 at 12:15 for our Spring Auction. Bring an item to auction off and bring your pocketbooks and wallets to bid on that item or items that catch your eye. Our own Ms. Nelda Bunch will be our Auctioneer. In the words of one of our recipients of this scholarship: It s hard to sometimes accept that the goals we set for ourselves may be limited, or unreachable. Limited because of time and effort; unreachable because of monetary boundaries. We can shift our schedule to accommodate time, we can increase our individual effort to overcome obstacles, but finding the funds to coincide with ambition is much more difficult. When you work full time and have family obligations, the ability to work more to fund more is inherently limited. This causes frustration in most and will cause others to quit or delay what they have been diligently working towards. NATP is an organization that not only helps those of us working towards our goals, it also encourages us not to quit. I was awarded the Stone-Lewis Scholarship during a time in my life when it was truly needed. My personal aspiration was to become a CPA. The CPA exam is rigorous, time consuming, and expensive. I am also a mother of three young children, and I was taking the exam right after having my second child. You can imagine how hectic my life was. The Stone-Lewis scholarship helped me to fund taking the CPA exam, and I am now a fully licensed CPA in Alabama. During a time where it is becoming increasingly difficult to find anyone standing in your corner, the people of NATP have, will, and do, support us ambitious dreamers. They will stand with you. Implement Circular 230 in their offices and in their practical procedures 2. Recognize potential issues 3. Understand preparer penalties 4. Understand preparer requirements as to due diligence IRS Field of Study Ethics CPE credits - 2 Real Life Estate Planning: Assisting Clients at the End With the new estate tax exemption many think that estate planning is passé. There is so much the professional tax community can do to assist our clients at the end of their life. From the proper titling of the assets to assisting them with meeting some goals, we are in a good position to ease their final days. After completing this session, attendees should be able to: 1. Recognize title issues of a client 2. Advise clients on the treatment of retirement plans with no beneficiary 3. Discuss potential problems of naming the estate as the beneficiary of retirement plans 4. Comprehend the differences to beneficiary between gifted and inherited items 5. Understand viatical options. IRS Field of Study Federal Tax Law CPE Credits - 2 Home Ownership and the 1040 Can my client claim the mortgage interest deduction if they are not on the mortgage? What about the real estate tax? Clients convert their rental and think the exclusion applies! This session examines equitable ownership, Section 121 exclusions, and the disqualified 121 gain. By attending this seminar, attendees should be able to: 1. Recognize Equitable Ownership 2. Determine the Section 121 exclusion in all cases, including when a disqualifying event has occurred 3. Recognize when a client may qualify for the reduced Section 121 exclusion 4.
