2 General Information Smoking Policy: Smoking is not permitted in the conference sessions. Conference Materials: Conference materials will be available at the site. CPE Credits: There will be 8 CPE credits available for attending the entire conference. Of these 8 hours, 1 hour will be State of Minnesota, 1 hour Wisconsin and 2 hours will be Ethics. Reminder: Casual and layered clothing is recommended due to tolerance levels of registrants to room temperatures. CANCELLATION POLICY: All conference cancellations must be confirmed in writing. 4 Speakers Debbie Gellatly, EA: Debbie received her AA Degree from FDLTCC College in Cloquet in Business. She is a fellow with the National Tax Practice Institute and a CSA with the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. She is also enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. Debbie owns Country Tax Service, LLC in Esko, MN helping over 500 individual and small business clients. She currently serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Tax Professionals, and has successfully completed the NATP State Instructor Certification Program. Cynthia McLane, EA: Cindy was a comptroller for a large manufacturing and construction company in Florida for 10 years. Upon moving to Minnesota in 1989 she worked as a comptroller for a large farm, construction and landscape company while building her tax and accounting practice. She has been director of her own business full time since Currently, she has two part time employees, provides payroll and accounting services for 26 small businesses and prepares about 250 personal and corporate tax returns. She advises and assists non profits with their 1023 and 1024 forms and helps them become and stay compliant under 501 Tax codes. Cindy currently serves on the Minnesota Chapter of NATP and currently serves as the Chapter Treasurer. 5 Course Descriptions IRS Updates & New Tax Legislation: 2 CPE Credits Delivery Method: Group - Live New Legislation Tax Issues will be covered with up-to-date information on expirations, extensions, extenders, new tax laws and important tax bills in process. IRS Tax Updates will cover important IRS policies or procedures for the practitioner. Specific examples will illustrate these IRS policies or procedures and applications. Independent Contractor vs. Employee 2 CPE Credits Delivery Method: Group Live Misclassification of workers is a very hot audit topic. The IRS is investigating employers who incorrectly classify workers as independent contractors when they are really employees. Learn when to use Form SS-8 and help your clients avoid penalties for misclassifying workers. Speakers Continued Karen Brehmer: Karen Brehmer is a Stakeholder Liaison with the Small Business and Self- Employed Division of the Internal Revenue Service. Stakeholder Liaisons provide training and outreach to tax practitioners and organizations that assist small business owners. Karen has been with the IRS for twenty seven years. She has held several positions, including answering tax law questions, and as a Revenue Officer working with small business owners who were not in compliance with payroll taxes. She joined Stakeholder Liaison in She regularly speaks at organization meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops on tax related topics that are relevant to tax professionals or small business owners. Karen holds a bachelor s degree from the University of Minnesota, majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis on English and Speech-Communication. Marlaine Willms: Marlaine Willms has been employed by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue as a Field Auditor since June She is assigned to the Superior office. In her position she conducts audits of sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations in the areas of income, sales/use tax and withholding taxes. Marlaine earned a bachelor s degree in accounting and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse. She is a Certified Public Accountant. Jesse VenRooy: Jesse VenRooy is a field auditor in the Wisconsin Department of Revenue s Eau Claire office. He is responsible for auditing individuals and corporations for income, franchise, sales and use taxes. He also provides taxpayer assistance. Mr. VenRooy has worked for the department since June of He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Operations Management from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

6 Course Descriptions Ethics and Circular 230: 2 CPE Credits Field of Study: Ethics Delivery Method: Group - Live Each year it seems tax return preparers are faced with more and more ethical dilemmas, either proposed by taxpayers or simply due to changes in the law. Circular 230 was developed to provide us with standards to prevent us from over stepping certain professional boundaries. This course summarizes Circular 230. Additionally, the course identifies the current IRS return preparer initiatives in place to improve the accuracy and quality of tax returns. Finally, the course highlights the penalties we could potentially face if we don t follow Circular 230 or the regulations. Upon completion of this course, the tax professional will be able to: Describe the current IRS hands-on initiative to improve the accuracy and quality of filed tax returns and to heighten awareness of preparer responsibilities. Explain the Circular 230 rules governing individuals eligible to represent taxpayers before the IRS. Explain the rules governing unenrolled preparers. Identify common penalties that can be assessed against tax return preparers and how to avoid them. Follow due diligence requirements for the earned income tax credit.
