1 Volume 2017, Issue PRESIDENT S POST By Matthew Lewis, EA, ATA, PA PASC President Dear PASC Members, As we near the end of 2017, we find a lot of uncertainty in the tax arena due to proposals that have been put forth in congress. I m sure many of you are receiving phone calls and s, as am I, wanting to know how the new tax laws are going to affect them. My crystal ball is pretty fuzzy as to what will actually pass congress and be signed into law by the president, if at all. At PASC we are committed to helping you understand the changes and the effect on our clients as those new tax laws are passed. If there is a tax bill that gets signed into law, we will be sending out notices and information by that will be helpful. We are exploring possibilities to have some type of update program depending on if and/or when legislation passes and what the effective date of the changes are. We have had several seminars around the state this year bringing you a variety of tax topics. As always we strive to provide you quality live educational opportunities at reasonable prices. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) is beginning the sunset review process for legislation and regulations governing Certified Public Accountants and those providing public accounting services including bookkeeping and tax preparation services in our state. Betsy Murray, our lobbyist, along with our Executive Director, Greg Williams will be having a preliminary meeting with a Policy Analyst from DORA in December. As our purpose is to protect the right to practice for each of our members, we are constantly engaged in the legislative and regulatory processes that might have any effect on our livelihood. May each of you have a productive 2018 tax season and may it not be too taxing. 2 Executive Director s Report PASC is wrapping up a year of change. We have a new President, Matt Lewis, with Lewis Tax Accounting, we are finishing up a seminar season with a new lineup of presenters, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies is beginning its sunset review of the State Board of Accountancy, and the US Congress is considering tax overhaul legislation. At the end of the seminar season we will evaluate our seminar lineup and begin making plans for 2018, which may also include some webinars. Any suggestions for 2018 are welcome. The Mile High Chapter broke all previous attendance records at the IRS Update in October and is in the final steps of using the proceeds to set up an ongoing scholarship fund with Metropolitan State University. The Pikes Peak Chapter is working with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on a local scholarship fund as well. The PASC Annual Convention was held in Longmont last June in conjunction with a specialty seminar on Farm topics/trust Estate Planning. Board elections were held and new board members were installed by National Society of Accountants District IX Governor Bernadette Koppy. The current board members are listed later in this newsletter and on the PASC website. In December the PASC Lobbyist, Betsy Murray, and Government Affairs Chair Andy Morehead, along with President Matt Lewis, and myself, will meet with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies as they begin their sunset review of the State Board of Accountancy (with final recommendations to be made to the Colorado Legislature in October of 2018). The programs, seminars, and events for 2018 will be developed by the board, with input from the members, over the next several months. Stay tuned for more details as events on the state and federal levels occur. Greg Find an Accountant Feature on PASC website The enhanced Find an Accountant feature allows members of the general public to locate PASC members for various purposes including tax preparation, bookkeeping, and accounting services.
