Chapter Member of: By John Hribar, CPPB MAPP President, 2016 My fellow MAPP members, Thank you for the opportunity to represent MAPP at the NIGP Forum in Maryland (the Washington DC area) this summer. There was so much to learn about our profession and the networking experience and knowledge gained made it a truly invaluable experience. It was such a wonderful and educational experience. I am grateful to have been able to attend. The Forum covered everything from Developing and Managing Requests for Proposals, a topic which is near and dear to our hearts, to Negotiating Software and Technology Agreements. While attending the chapter president s luncheon during the Forum, I was proud to accept two chapter awards received by MAPP. The first award was a certificate recognizing our 40 th Anniversary as a Chapter. This alone gives us pause to consider over the past 40 years all the learning opportunities our own conferences have offered and will continue to offer to our membership, as well as the networking opportunities which enable us to take advantage of the vast amount of years of service and knowledge that collectively our organization provides. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAPP and here s to 40 more!!! The second award the chapter received was for having a high percentage of 67% of our chapter members also having membership with NIGP. On the subject of education and networking, I believe it is of great importance for all members to take advantage of MAPP hosted the NIGP trainings. This is significantly important for those seeking certification or recertification as a CPPB or CPPO. Attending seminars and participating in training makes us all more knowledgeable employees, and provides not only personal but also professional benefits. Remember, there are scholarship opportunities that can be taken advantage of through MAPP and I encourage each member to explore pursuing educational opportunities as they are offered. After all, it is through training and sharing with our coworkers that we increase our knowledge base, thus making us better stewards of public funds and greater assets to our entities On another note, both locally and nationally, this is an important election year and I cannot emphasize enough how important is to make your voice heard by getting out and voting for the candidate(s) of your choice. I encourage each of you to explore the issues, to educate yourselves on the various candidates position on those points, and to exercise your right as citizens to participate in the governing process by casting your ballot. Lastly, it is hard to believe that it is fall already here. The trees will be turning their bright colors, we are steaming toward the holidays, and soon snow will be flying. 4 Family Matters Congratulations to Bill and Kris Noyes on the graduation of their daughter Kayla from Army Basic Training in Fort Jackson, SC! Kayla is now in A.I.T (Advanced Individual Training) to become an Allied Trades Specialist in Fort Lee, VA. Once AIT Training is completed, Kayla will return to MO and will be assigned to the Army National Guard Apache Helicopter unit at Whiteman AFB, while simultaneously attending the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and pursuing a degree in the Professional Pilot Program and participating in the Army ROTC program through a National Guard Minuteman Scholarship. 5 Editorial THE FIVE SECOND RULE Carmela Thornton, CPPO, CPPB One of the most informative sessions that I attended at the 2016 NIGP Forum in National Harbor, Maryland was the opening session The 5 Second Rule: Achieve Breakthrough Performance in your Career and Life presented by Mel Robbins. Mel started her career as a criminal defense attorney and went on to create a retail/internet technology company. She is currently one of CNN s most popular on-air commentators. To date, this five second rule workshop has been heard or viewed by three million people. She stated we are meant to do extraordinary things in our careers/lives and this rule will help us achieve it. She asserted there is only one thing standing in between you and the life you have always wanted-and that s YOU. She believes if you change nothing, then nothing changes. It takes five seconds to change your life, because in five seconds you can let doubts, fears, and hesitations take hold, or you can push yourself past them. Mel believes the secret to achieving what you want in life and in work, is to simply learn to give yourself that little nudge. The five second rule helps to win the battle with self-doubt and fear. This technique she uses is a research-backed method to discovering your confidence and courage at work and in your life. You can use it to change your behavior, share your ideas and remove the negative thoughts that stop you.* The way the five second rule works is if you feel you need to do something, you have up to five seconds from the thought to take action or your brain will talk you out of it. For example, if you see someone that you would like to speak with about an issue, you should start walking towards that individual before the five seconds are up or your brain will tell you maybe it will be better to talk to them later. Mel stated how she likes the tag line of Nike. She said it is a very powerful tag line because Do It is great but it becomes powerful when you add the Just Do It which means just get pass whatever may be holding you back and just do it. As the workshop overview affirmed, I feel the majority of the attendees left feeling inspired, empowered, equipped and willing to tackle their professional and personal dreams or at least give it a try.
