1 Lao Securities Exchange On Monday, the LSX kept gaining with the big support from the banking stock. The index advanced by 0.58 percent or 7.14 points to hit 1, marks, another highest year to date level. In addition, the market trading volume also picked up 55 percent from last Friday to reach 80,626 shares worth around 476 million kip. Foreigners were the major traders of the day. After a big jump of 200 kip at the end of last week, EDL-Gen took a break at 5,900 kip with the comfortable matching volume of 80,573 shares traded for over 475 million kip. BCEL-KT was the only active broker of the electricity stock today. At the same time, BCEL surprised the market with its year to date highest closing price at 7,850 kip. This price lastly saw on August 29 th, one day ahead of the previous Ex-dividend date of the banking share. Unfortunately, trading of the stock appeared to execute only 53 shares, discouraged by the lack of selling power. Local News Officials power up to oversee hydro development As Laos gears up to become a global hydropower force, the country is taking seriously its responsibility to train officials working in the industry. The knowledge boost will help officials to prevent and address any negative impacts of the dams that are being built. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines Viraphon Viravong on Friday presented certificates to senior officials from Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal after they took a five day training course in Vientiane last week on hydropower risk management. The training is part of Laos' efforts to build modern hydropower plants in such a way that will minimise their social and environmental impacts. The government considers hydropower to be critical in creating a secure supply of energy for Laos. 2 aims to generate capital from the export of energy to neighbouring countries. Laos could potentially build 120 hydropower plants with a combined generating capacity of 28,000MW. At present, Laos has 17 dams which generate less than a tenth of this power. LTC, ETL stock market listing still in doubt Details of a government plan to list Lao Telecom Company (LTC), a Lao-Thai joint venture, on the Lao Securities Exchange may become clearer early next year. Thaicom holds a 49 percent share in Lao Telecom, which is one of the largest telecom operators in Laos. Last week the Thai firm announced it was conducting a feasibility study on listing the joint venture on both the Stock Exchange of Thailand and the Lao Securities Exchange on a dual listing basis. According to Thaicom, as at the end of the third quarter this year, LTC had 1.2 million phone subscribers. Competition in the telecom market is high in Laos, with the existence of four mobile network operators. ETL, Unitel and Beeline operate networks in addition to LTC. But despite the strong competition, LTC has been able to maintain a leading position in the Lao telecoms industry. According to a senior official from the Lao Securities Exchange, the Lao government would merge its 51 percent share in LTC with ETL, which is fully stateowned, before listing both companies on the stock market. The government is considering merging LTC, which holds a large share of the cell phone market in Laos, with ETL, in a move aimed at convincing more people to buy shares. The government believes that not many people would buy ETL shares due to the strong competition in the industry. (Vientiane Times) Global News Asia Rises on Positive US Tone, Nikkei Advances (CNBC, 10:30) Asian shares rose on Monday, boosted by a positive tone in U.S. equities last week while Japan's Nikkei hit a two-month high on expectations a new government after next month's election in Japan may deliver more stimulus. The benchmark index [.N (+1.66%)] was up points at 9,144.3, comfortably breaking above its 200-day moving average at 9,074.39, while the broader Topix advanced 1.3 percent to The Hang Seng Index [.HSI (+0.65%)] rose 0.5 percent to 21,261.7 points while the China Enterprises Index [.HSCE (+0.66%)] also gained 0.5 percent. In the mainland, the benchmark Shanghai Composite [.SSEC (-0.31%)] lost 0.3 percent at 2, The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) [.KS (+1.17%)] was 1.1 percent higher, at 1, The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index [.AXJO (+0.4%)] climbed 14.2 points to 4,351.1 after falling 2.8 percent last week. New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index [.NZ (-0.07%)] was flat at 3,947.3 points.
