9 OUR STORY Bob Derrenbacker graduated from Colgate University in He joined Northwestern Mutual in 1960 and began his insurance career in Syracuse, New York. Since then, Bob has worked with families, business owners, physicians, and other professionals in regards to their insurance and investment programs. Several of his clients needed assistance with their employee benefit programs, so Bob began working with these clients on their Group Life and Long Term Disability coverage needs. He also began assisting them with their qualified and non-qualified retirement plans. Peter Derrenbacker joined his father at Northwestern Mutual after graduating from Colgate University in Peter began assisting Bob with many of his existing client relationships as well as developing a strong client base of his own. The two would later enter a partnership with Jim Shields, a long-time Northwestern Mutual representative with his own growing practice and become what is now known as Derrenbacker Shields Financial Group. As the business grew, so did the team. Today, Bob, Peter and Jim are joined by another financial professional Jim s son, Tim Shields. The office also includes five team members that help ensure all clients receive the personal and attentive service they deserve.

He works closely with medical and legal professionals, business owners and families to help them prepare for financial success and protect what is most important to them. Peter began working with Northwestern Mutual in 1989 after graduating from Colgate University with a B.A. in Economics. He has earned several designations and certifications in the fields of insurance and wealth management including the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU ) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC ) designations as well as the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP ) certification. Peter is also a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), the premier association of financial professionals. Peter serves as President of the Samaritan Center in Syracuse, which is an interfaith soup kitchen that feeds and assists the needy in our community. Peter also serves on the board of the Crouse Health Foundation. Peter and his wife, Tamie, live in Fayetteville, New York. They have two children in college and enjoy spending time with family and friends. Peter also enjoys golf, and organizes and participates in various charity golf tournaments throughout the area. Jim has spent his entire career at Northwestern Mutual working to build solid insurance programs, financial strategies and legacy plans tailored to the individual needs of his clients. Jim graduated from Syracuse University in 1985 with a B.A. in Policy Studies, then began his career at Northwestern Mutual where he earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU ) professional designation. Over the years, Jim has developed a client base that includes high-net-worth individuals, business owners and many clients within the financial industry. Jim is actively involved in his community, having served on the board of the Food Bank of Central New York, the missions committee of his church and on the Fayetteville-Manlius YoungLife committee as well. He has coached multiple youth sports teams in the Manlius area where he and his wife, Linda, raised their five children. The couple enjoy spending summers at their cottage on Otisco Lake and especially spending time with their two grandchildren. Jim is an avid golfer and enjoys Syracuse University sporting events. Bob has been serving his clients in the areas of insurance and employee benefits for over 50 years. After receiving his B.A. in Economics from Colgate University, Bob started at Northwestern Mutual and has never looked back. His areas of expertise include individual insurance programs and personal retirement planning. In this industry, Bob is best known for service. From the minute he meets a client, he takes a personal interest in getting to know and understand them. Bob has earned his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU ) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC ) designations as well as the Certified Long Term Care (CLTC ) certification. Bob is also a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT). Bob believes in giving back to the local community. As such, he is an active supporter of the Samaritan Center and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Bob and his wife Joan are lifelong residents of the Syracuse area. Together they have three children and six grandchildren. Bob enjoys golfing and spending his summers in the Adirondacks with family.

Nick is very knowledgeable regarding investments and strategies but he also brings an unparalleled commitment to excellence. Whether it is staying up-to-date on industry changes to better educate our clients or preparing a fund analysis to provide a thorough comparison, Nick is always going the extra mile. Nick earned a B.A. in Economics from Denison University and maintains his FINRA Series 7 and 65 registrations as well as the New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license. He also completed The American College CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER TM curriculum and earned the CFP certification in In addition, he earned the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation from The American College in Our individual insurance operations are supported by Kathy Spiddle, who has been with our team since With over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, Kathy has cultivated an extensive knowledge of insurance and annuity products. She guides clients through all aspects of the application process as well as providing ongoing support for the life of the policy. Kathy is able to assist our clients in gaining a true understanding of the value of their policies. Our clients appreciate knowing they can contact Kathy with any question from cash value to cost basis and get an answer they can trust. Kathy attended SUNY Cobleskill and holds her New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license. Trina Kinney, who joined us with over 10 years experience in the employee benefits industry works with our group benefits clients. Trina has worked as an HR and benefits professional for many years, which gives her a unique perspective when servicing our clients. She has been in their shoes so uncompromising customer service is of the utmost importance to her. Trina handles everything from implementation and renewals, billing or claims questions to employee communication meetings. Trina is dedicated strictly to employee benefits which allows her to get to know our clients and better understand their business needs. Trina maintains her New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license.

His clients range from young professionals to senior-level financial services professionals. His previous experience as a fixed income portfolio manager for Deutsche Bank makes him a valuable resource to our clients and to the team. Additionally, Tim holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, widely recognized as one of the most difficult industry marks to achieve. Tim graduated from Cornell in 2013 with a B.S. in Applied Economics and Management with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. He holds FINRA Series 7 and 66 registrations and also maintains his New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license. Tim and his wife, Rebecca, live in Tully with their daughter, Emily. Mary Alice is responsible for the administration and service of our investment and advisory accounts. With an extensive background in the financial services industry, Mary Alice is critical to the support of our investment operations. In her role, she works one-onone with individuals who are opening or transferring accounts or making any number of updates including fund and beneficiary changes. Her knowledge of investment products and services enables her to provide a concierge level of service by acting as a liaison between our financial partners and our clients. Mary Alice graduated from SUNY Albany with a B.S. in Business Administration, and has an MBA from Syracuse University. She holds FINRA Series 6 and 63 registrations and also maintains her New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license. Directing our marketing efforts is Brian Perdew, who joined our team in Brian s duties include relationship management and the marketing of our practice. In addition to marketing, Brian assists our investment operations team in preparing for client meetings by reviewing portfolios and preparing retirement income projections. Brian s prior experience with investments, annuities and retirement plans makes him a valuable resource internally as well as to our clients. Brian graduated from Le Moyne College in 2006 with a B.S. in Business Administration with concentrations in Marketing and in Management Information Systems. He holds FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 registrations, as well as his New York State Life, Accident and Health Insurance license.
