We knw that the lss f a parent isn t just emtinally painful; it can be devastating t a family s finances. In the same way that Scial Security helps t lift up the disabled and elderly when they need it, we supprt families when an incme-earning parent dies. In 2017, we distributed an average f $2.6 billin each mnth t benefit abut 4.2 millin children because ne r bth f their parents are disabled, retired, r deceased. Thse dllars help t prvide the necessities f life and help make it pssible fr thse children t cmplete high schl. Yu might ask, wh can get child s benefits? Yur unmarried child can get benefits if they re: Yunger than age 18; years ld and a full-time student (n higher than grade 12); r 18 r lder with a disability that began befre age 22. T get benefits, a child must have:

9 A parent wh s disabled r retired and entitled t Scial Security benefits; r A parent wh died after having wrked lng enugh in a jb where they paid Scial Security taxes. Benefits stp when yur child reaches age 18 unless yur child is a student r disabled. Within a family, a child can receive up t half f the parent s full retirement r disability benefit. If a child receives Survivrs benefits, he r she can get up t 75 percent f the deceased parent s basic Scial Security benefit. There is a limit t the amunt f mney that we can pay t a family. This family maximum is determined as part f every Scial Security benefit cmputatin. It can be frm 150 t 180 percent f the parent s full benefit amunt. If the ttal amunt payable t all family members exceeds this limit, we reduce each persn s benefit prprtinately (except the parent s) until the ttal equals the maximum allwable amunt.
