1 Report on Faculty Trends Washington University Medical Campus This report looks at annual fall faculty counts for the Medical Campus, by gender and by ethnicity, over the last 15 years. The following table provides a summary of the population and trends covered in this report. Medical Campus Full-Time Faculty 15 years 10 years 5 years Total Full-Time Faculty Women Women as % 26% 28% 32% 35% Men Men as % 74% 72% 68% 65% Underrepresented Minorities URM as % 4% 4% 5% 6% Note: URM includes African American, Hispanic, Native American/Alaskan and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander for this report. Over 15 years, the number of underrepresented minority faculty has more than doubled (from 51 to 111) while the overall number of full-time faculty grew by 42% (from 1,369 to 1,942). The number of women increased by 93% (from 353 to 680) while the number of men grew by 24% (from 1,016 to 1,262) over the same period. This report begins with some summary graphs showing how the percentages of women and URM faculty have changed by rank and by track, at 5-year intervals. Detail tables by year for each track and rank group follow. The data are based on the University's annual fall faculty counts as of November 1 each year. Full-time faculty with the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and Instructor are the primary focus of this analysis; part-time counts are included in some of the detail tables for additional context. The HR data associated with faculty tracks at the Medical Campus are more precisely defined than in the past. For older historical data where the track category was not clearly discernible, a surrogate was developed based on job codes. This should be taken into account when separately considering the data for an individual track. Institutional & Analysis March 2016
