1 Investment Plan for Europe State of Play April 2018 COUNTRY FACTSHEET: ITALY THE JUNCKER PLAN IN ITALY Operations approved in Italy under the Juncker Plan s European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) now represent a total financing volume of 7.2 billion. This is expected to trigger 40 billion in investments. IE DK SE LT FI EE LV Darker colour represents higher investments relative to GDP UK BE NL LU DE CZ PL SK FR AT SI HR HU RO IT BG PT ES GR MT CY
2 INFRASTRUCTURE AND INNOVATION PROJECTS The 57 approved projects* amount to 4.9 billion in European Investment Bank (EIB) financing under the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI). This is expected to trigger 16 billion in investments. * Infrastructure and innovation projects include operations supporting investment in more than one country - they may therefore be counted in other country factsheets. Energy - Social infrastructure - Transport - Digital - Agriculture PROJECTS Environment and resource efficiency - RDI - Smaller companies Acquedotto pugliese water services (signed December 2017) Acquedotto pugliese is the largest integrated water services operator in Southern Italy. The EIB is providing 200 million in financing to upgrade the water network, and invest in water treatment facilities to increase the availability and quality of the drinking water distributed to the local population. The project aims to reduce water waste, maintain the efficiency of the facilities, improve water quality, increase the amount of water available per capita, and extend the areas covered by water and wastewater services. Financing under EFSI: 200 million Total investment expected: 542 million Treviso hospital (signed August 2017) The EIB is providing 70 million under the Investment Plan to Ospedal Grando S.p.A., to support the design, construction and operation of the new Cittadella della Salute within the Ca Foncello Hospital in Treviso. The project entails the refurbishment of some existing buildings and the construction of new facilities, including an enhanced medical centre with almost 1,000 beds and new research and logistical centres. The new and refurbished buildings will meet higher energy standards allowing for savings and CO 2 emissions reduction. Financing under EFSI: 70 million Total investment expected: 267 million
3 Dolomiti Energia (signed October 2016) The EIB is lending Dolomiti Energia 100 million to renew and develop its gas and electricity distribution networks. The financing will strengthen and maintain hydroelectric plants in the province of Trento in northern Italy, the main area in which Dolomiti Energia operates and employs 1,400 people. Financing under EFSI: 100 million Total investment expected: 180 million Telecom Italia: high speed broadband (signed December 2015) The EIB is providing 500 million to Telecom Italia for the rollout of a new broadband access network - combined fibre and copper solutions - for ultrahigh-speed broadband services in Italy. As a result of this financing, 7 million more households will benefit from high speed broadband, increasing the population coverage by 32% to 60% of all Italian households. Financing under EFSI: 500 million Total investment expected: 1808 million Italgas Gas Smart Metering (signed December 2016) The project aims to improve efficiency of the gas distribution system, increase customer information and awareness, while facilitating remote reading. Financing under EFSI: 300 million Total investment expected: 620 million Please note this list is not exhaustive and only includes a select number of projects. For the full list of projects, please visit
4 SME FINANCING Under EFSI the European Investment Fund approved 66 agreements with financial intermediaries (banks, funds, etc). The financing totals 2.3 billion and is expected to trigger 24 billion in investments. 210,832 smaller companies or start-ups will benefit from this support. Intermediaries include: CREDEM, BPER, Mediocredito Trentino-Alto Adige S.p.A, Credito Valtellinese Group, Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Cambiano, Banca Cassa di Risparmio di Savigliano S.p.A., Banco Popolare and Banca Popolare di Bari Echolight medical technology Echolight is a medical technology company developing innovative ways to detect and diagnose osteoporosis at an early stage, through radiation-free echographic examination. It also offers a monitoring solution for osteoporosis that is easily accessible, so reduces waiting times at medical appointments. In 2016 the company received financing from Panakés, a venture capital fund that specialises in medical companies which is guaranteed by the EIF under the Investment Plan. This financing allowed them to hire a number of scientists to carry out clinical studies in 15 different hospitals across Europe. Umbria Legno: wooden furniture Umbria Legno is a young company specialising in designing and manufacturing wooden garden furniture. Being a start-up with no credit history, Umbria Legno struggled to access financing to grow their business. The solution came through a bank loan with the help of Confidicoop Marche, backed by the Investment Plan for Europe. The business is now growing and taking on new staff. The information on this page is not part of formal EIB reporting on EFSI; it should therefore be taken as provisional and unaudited.
