1 lexandria ity ublic chools edistricting: raft ptions ctober 6 reface he following document contains F ptions for the edistricting eview ommittee to review and analyze. hese options only serve as the starting point for creating viable scenarios that meet the project objectives and adhere to redistricting criteria. he options that are shown account for planned changes to facilities as identified in the facilities master plan. ne question that always arises is, ow do these boundaries account for changes that happen in different years? his is a good question and one that applies to this particular process. - lanned Facility hanges chool - apacity ew 6- apacity pening chool ear John dams 9-9 James olk - ew West 6-9 atrick enry - -9 ew ouglas crthur - 6- grade students living in atrick enry zone are assumed to attend atrick ouglas acrthur moves to swing building in 9- John dams' - capacity will decrease to 9 in -9 to accommodate re- classes. he table to the right shows the planned facility changes that the eview ommittee is planning for. he best approach to redistricting is to first build a plan that factors in all of the planned changes, and then to determine how to phase in boundaries incrementally to account for each year s change in facilities and capacity. lanning for the out-year of the timeframe is best because boundaries can be incrementally phased in to account for annual changes and students are only moved once during the process. In the instance of, the committee is charged to build a plan that takes out to 9-. he 9- year is the target year because this when ouglas acrthur moves to a temporary building while their school is being worked on. ven though 9- is the final target year, the table above reflects that most of the school facility changes will occur with the -9 school year. It is very likely that -9 will be the year that most students are affected as a result of this redistricting plan, with smaller numbers of students possibly affected in - and in apacity and Utilization tatistics he table below shows the capacity for elementary schools. re-indergarten classrooms are not included in these capacity figures. lso, the 6- grade classrooms at Jefferson-ouston and atrick enry are not included in the - capacity figures. he 9- - grade capacity figures are also represented in the table below. lementary chool apacity 9- - apacity - nrollment (-6 - nrolled Utilization (-6 Utilization (-6 apacity harles Barrett 9% 6% ora elly 96% 9% ouglas acrthur 9% 69 % eorge ason 6 6 % 6 % James olk 6 9% 9% Jefferson-ouston 9% 9% John dams % % yles-rouch % 6 9% atthew aury 6% 6 % ount Vernon % 6 % atrick enry 9 9% 9% amuel W ucker % 6% William amsay 6 6 % 9 % ew 6 otal % 6 %
