3 3 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 105, Number 2 Greetings Philatelists, Messages At the time of this writing it is minus 27 degrees with a severe cold warning for Eastern Alberta. My thoughts go out to our members in Wainwright, North Battleford and Saskatoon to name just a few places where the club has members and where indoor pursuits such as stamp collecting makes a lot of sense this time of year. Meanwhile, the first meeting of the calendar year was an exceptionally busy one. It is clear that the long hiatus over the Christmas Holidays only made meeting fellow collectors more desirable. One of the perks of being president (one of only a few as many aspects of this role seem to be duties rather than perks!) is that I get fan mail. Mary Scott, an avid collector of a.o. flowers, cactus, and succulents on stamps moved last year to York near Toronto. She wrote from aboard a cruise ship near Hawaii that she has the best of memories of the club. Is this not what it is all about: provide an opportunity for collectors of philatelic material to meet like minded people and to facilitate exchange of knowledge and collectibles, whether for money or in-kind items. With this in mind I like to encourage everyone to overcome their shyness and strike a conversation with fellow members. Ask: what do you collect and more often than not you discover common interests. Many years ago there was a trading corner at club meetings where contacts with collectors with similar interests would be made effortlessly. Perhaps you have another suggestion to make the club even better. We do have a suggestion box at the front desk. If we did not act on suggestions you made previously, don't despair, good ideas take time to ripen. Besides. some of us are having "senior moments". So, if you feel young and have ideas we like to hear from you! Just in case you do not have ideas: here is a suggestion: volunteer to help with the Spring Show. Our members pass on condolences to Joyce, his wife of 48 years and family. Life member who joined the club in (1846). Letters ( s) to the editor: I loved the cover for the January 2016 Bulletin. I think this was the first se-tenant issue by Canada. It inspired my dad to collect every possible combination (duplication permitted) of blocks of 4, horizontal pairs, and vertical pairs. So for the next bulletin - a quiz: How many different blocks of 4 How many horizontal pairs How many vertical pairs? BULLETIN Volume 105, Number 2 British Cameroons by Richard Barnes After WW I the League of Nations mandated the German African Protectorate of Kamerun to be divided between Great Britain and France. Fig 1. France received the greater part of the territory naming it Cameroun. Great Britain created a tiny mandate naming it British Cameroons. This small mandate was administered by the colony of Nigeria. The Cameroons never issued its own stamps but used Nigerian stamps until Jan At this time Nigerian stamps with a two line red overprint CAMEROONS, U.K.T.T. (United Kingdom Territorial Trust), Fig 2 3, Scott #66-77 were issued. Fig 2 They were used in both the North and South regions of the British Cameroons. The UN Trusteeship of British Cameroon ceased to exist in Oct What I find interesting was that the 1953 Nigerian stamp set was still available in large enough quantities to be used for the overprint. Northern Cameroons was amalgamated into Nigeria while Southern Cameroons became part of the Republic of Cameroun. The French speaking Republic of Cameroun also issued a single set of three stamps overprinted in British Sterling, Fig 4, Scott for use in Southern Cameroon. These stamps were valid for very short period of time. Scott has a note in the catalogue that states it was a few days before these stamps were recalled and destroyed. RB

8 8 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 105, Number 2 What To Do With Damaged Stamps by Jeff Pacey I was sorting through a couple of lots of stamps that I had bought and allowed to pile up before getting to them. There were tons of damaged stamps, seriously the amount was huge. I probably had a half of a shoebox. It's hard to believe another collector would allow so much garbage into an auction lot. My hamsters cage was in needed of a cleaning. After washing the cage out instead of changing the cedar shavings for shavings, I dumped all the stamps into the cage. He nested right in and made himself at home. I have continued to dump waste stamps into his change since then. A lot of them he just ignores but some he chews up and takes into his nest. Must be something about the paper or glue on some of them that he likes. Why would anyone buy this bogus overprint?
