It will be sent electronically to all Grade 12 students and their parents who have provided their addresses to our office. It will also be available on our website. 2 POST-SECONDARY INFORMATION SESSIONS UBC ADMISSIONS: A UBC Advisor will go through the admission requirements for their various faculties. We strongly encourage you to attend this workshop if you are considering UBC. Parents welcome! Important: If you are interested in applying to the Sauder School of Business (BCom) you will need to submit a VIDEO interview as apart of your application. This workshop will be a very good opportunity to learn more. January 15, 2018 is the deadline to apply for admission for Winter Session (September 2018 to April 2019) and Summer Session (May to August 2019) KPU ADMISSIONS: March 1, 2018 is the deadline to apply for the Fall (September). August 1, 2018 is the deadline to apply for the Spring (January). December 1, 2018 is the deadline to apply for the Summer (May). UFV ADMISSIONS: August 3, 2018 is the deadline for Grade 12 students applying to Fall, to submit final high school grades. BCIT BIG INFO SESSION Date: Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Come out and explore all that BCIT has to offer! This free event is open to everyone & provides a unique opportunity for those interested in attending BCIT to find out more about our full-time, part-time and degree programs all in one place, at one time. M WOSK ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP AWARD (pacificparklands.com/grants-and-scholarships The Leadership Award was established b the Pacific Parklands Foundation for the development of youth leadership in The leadership fund is used to engage, train and empower today's youth with the skills necessary for the future sustainability of our spectacular city and regional parks. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION PSAT EXAM (Cont.) This A UPSAT G U S T is 2available 2, to Langley students V O L. 2 9 wanting to write the SAT's for US College Applications. It is open to Grade 9 through Grade 12. Students will receive a report in Check the bulletin boards outside the December directly from the College Board Counselling Centre for updated with their results. This is a great way for opportunities. students to get a clear feel of what to expect in the SAT. It is a series of five themed multiple choice exams that cover math and reading comprehension. Due to limited space exams will be reserved for first students to pay in full. Costs $40.00 (checks payable to Mountain Secondary Schools) CANADIAN ARMED FORCES ( The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) offers several different paid education programs in which successful applicants' post-secondary tuition and books are paid for. They also receive an annual salary while attending school. Open enrolment and the deadline for applications is on January 31, 2018 (November 2017 is recommended). Please visit the website for more information on the benefits of each program. UBC SCHOLARSHIPS (you.ubc.ca/deadlines) Major Entrance Scholarship: December 1, 2017 is the deadline to apply for admission for Winter Session (September 2018 to April 2019) if you wish to be considered for a Major Entrance Scholarship. All Canadian citizens and permanent residents who apply by this date will be automatically considered. Centennial Scholars Entrance Award: December 1, 2017 is the deadline to apply for admission for Winter Session (September 2018 to April 2019 if you wish to be considered for the Centennial Scholars Entrance Award. A separate application package for this award is required. AES ENGINEERING $ October 6, 2017 is the deadline for the AES Scholarship. They are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by an evaluation of the essays that are submitted. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. Students must submit an essay to scholarships@aesengineers.com between 500 to 1000 words in answer to the following questions: The value award ranges from $250 to $1,000 annually. All applications and nominations are reviewed by the Foundations Environmental Leadership Selection Committee and they determine the number of recipients and the value of each of the awards presented annually. *** October 15, 2017 is the application deadline. When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey? 4 SD35 SCHOLARSHIP DATABASE The SD 35 Scholarship Database is not comprehensive. It was designed to assist Langley students and reflects scholarships that SD 35 students have been successful in securing in the past. Please note that you will need to research any scholarships that you wish to apply for as dates and criteria are subject to change. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Opportunities will be posted in the main hallway outside the Counselling Centre, check there often and see the Career Advisor for more information. NORTH LANGLEY BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION The NLBA is looking for volunteer basketball coaches! The season runs from October March Every Friday night from 6-8pm. This is the Under 7 league (ages 5-6), and is based on the Jr. NBA model. You do not have to be on the basketball team to get involved. These little kids are awesome and need some of your energy. If you are interested, Donna Caljow (volunteer.nlba@gmail.com). READING BUDDIES PROGRAM The Reading Buddies program is starting for Fall 2017 at several Langley libraries, including Langley, Walnut Grove, Fort Langley and Aldergrove libraries. Secondary school students in Grades volunteer in the program as Big Buddies, and are assigned a Little Buddy to read with for one hour a week after school from October - December. This program helps Little Buddies become better readers and is a fantastic mentorship opportunity. Applications for the program are available at participating libraries and are due back by September 21, CAREER RELATED OPPORTUNITIES FIRE HALL WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT Langley School District #35 is offering two sessions of work experience with Township of Langley fire fighters. This is for students who are seriously considering fire fighting as an occupation. FIRST RESPONDERS WORKSHOP Date: Monday, October 16, 2017 Time: 8:15am to 2:30pm Members from the Township Fire Department, Langley RCMP, and BC Ambulance will respond to a stimulated car crash. The professionals participating will guide students through a review of the stimulation. Applications will close on September 29, 2017 LANGLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Langley School District #35 is offering three sessions of LMH work experience program with practicing professionals in the Health field. Participants are selected through an application process. Applications will close on October 6, 2017 Page 4

On the tour, you will have the chance to learn some basic Health Care skills in the stimulation labs as well as hear from students who are currently in different health care programs. She is available for appointments daily from 8:00am - 3:30pm to assist students with post-secondary and career exploration, volunteer opportunities and dual-credit programs including Youth TRAIN in Trades, Youth WORK in Trades and Work Experience.
