6 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 An Unusual Stamp Club In Edmonton by Dale Speirs At BNAPEX 2017 in Calgary on the Labour Day weekend, I came across a postcard with a cachet on it advertising a stamp club I'd never heard of before. Friends Of Stamps And Coins Of Edmonton is not mentioned in any philatelic history, including the series published in Canadian Philatelist a few years ago. It was associated with Friends of Berlin, an anti- Communist German group that in 1983 merged with two other groups to form the German Cultural Association. Can any ESC member supply details about this forgotten stamp club? Did they collect only Germany or were they worldwide collectors? Keith Spencer dug into his memory banks and found some information about the club. The Friends of Berlin was basically a German social club that had a club house/ building on west side of the city, on Hy 16 near the CFRN T.V. station. It had a kitchen and hall for social events. Many of the members were stamp and coin collectors and many of them were Edmonton Stamp Club members. They had, for many years, an annual exhibition where perhaps 8 or 9 members put up displays. 7 7 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 Stamp Catalogues A Review Richard Barnes Last month I read an ad for CD Stamp Catalogues by Ralph Philips in Israel. He advertised one that immediately caught my interest Oman State, Dhufar & South Arabia. I have been trying for 20 years to find a stamp catalogue for the State of Oman as well as one for Dhufar. I sent an requesting for information and a listing of any other catalogues he had developed. I received a listing of 24 different titles. He has a very comprehensive listing ranging from Vol1 Modern British Locals (CD s), Vol 2 Modern USA Locals (4 CD s), Vol 11 Canada: Local & Strike Mails, Vol 16 East Asia Local Posts, Vol 18 Non-UN Recognized States of Former USSR and the list continues. I purchased 4 different catalogues, Vol 10 J.N.F. K.K.L., Vol 15 State of Oman, Dhufar & Federation of South Arabia, Vol 19 Palestine , and Vol 17 African Breakaway States. These catalogues are not competition for Scott, Michel, or SG. They meet the Webster definition 2b of a catalogue a pamphlet or book that contains such a list. Mr. Philips does not claim to have a definitive listing of all the philatelic items for any particular area. He is a collector who has compiled a well-illustrated listing of what he has found. All the catalogues have a short informative historical and political introduction to each section of the catalogues. The indexes for the catalogues are by separate files on the CD. This does not allow smooth movement around the information on the CD. I am continually scrolling and jumping between files. Because many of the philatelic states in the catalogues I am reviewing are areas of civil war, pure fantasy, political governments not recognized by the UPU or nonfunctional governments unable to defend their philatelic sovereignty this has allowed philatelic vultures/pirates to exploit the situation by printing a myriad of stamps/labels. This international complex of unscrupulous printer s issues is not addressed but their stamps are included. All catalogues are very well illustrated. The stamps are listed in chronological sequence. There are gaps in the listing of stamps. Sets may be incomplete or missing completely. They are not Michel catalogues and are not pretending to be. They are a complication of the information Mr. Phillips has acquired. Continued next page
8 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 I have enjoyed these catalogues. As an example, I considered myself knowledgeable in the history of the philately of the south end of the Arabian Peninsula. I found two stamp issues that I was unfamiliar with; Audhali overprints on Aden stamps (Fig 1) and the Shaib Dependency (Fig 2). I am trying to create a traditional style catalogue for the State of Oman. Mr. Phillips information is not complete and in several cases I have the stamp sets where he only has the souvenir sheet (Fig 3). He also has found sets I am not familiar with. This helps me know what I am missing and need to be looking for. The Phillips Stamp Catalogue CD s are not technical philatelic treatises however they are fun and informative. I will be purchasing two more that cover my areas of philatelic interest.
9 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 The Most Complete Stamp Catalogue... Richard Barnes and updated online stamp catalogue in the world... begins the introduction to the catalogue on I am a duffer preferring the traditional hard copy catalogue or when needing information found on the net I print it off before using the information or data. So why am I writing about an online stamp catalogue? My preferred method obtaining stamps for my albums is to trade or exchange stamps. I collect Middle East, North Africa and the Horn of Africa stamps. These regions are not commonly collected in North America. I find that I usually have to correspond with locals or international staff working in these regions. My collections are developed enough that I do not need one for one exchange of inexpensive stamps. I need to trade by want lists. Traditional stamp catalogues either hard copy or digital are expensive. At this time, the Stampworld catalogue is free. It is extensive in its world coverage. Both persons trading stamps have access to the same catalogue, same catalogue numbers and same catalogue values providing confidence to both sides of the exchange. This is the reason I have had an increase in individuals who want to use this catalogue when trading stamps. I do not know who and how this catalogue is updated. This catalogue suffers from not being current for my areas of interest, 2 to 4 years behind the time. In addition, the dates of issue of current issues can be incorrect. The user of this catalogue will have to check to ensure your catalogue numbers against this catalogue and adjust your want lists as necessary. These are the same problems that the Scott catalogue has and they depend on dealers providing them with their information. Catalogue prices are in Euros. With use you become acclimatized to doing the exchange rate. I have found this catalogue a useful tool when conducting stamp exchanges off shore.
10 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 Barend has started a series of postcard collections, highlighting bridges in Alberta. This is the second bridge in his collection. Continued page 12
11 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 Meeting Dates The Edmonton Stamp Club meets Mondays at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria of St. Joseph High School, Street. Park to the north of the school and use the main entrance at the south-east corner of the school. All BNAPSers welcome. For information contact David Piercey at or Steven Friedenthal at Dec. 13th Wednesday dinner meeting, location of restaurant TBA. Normal location: Temple Beth Ora, Avenue (entrance from south parking lot door) Continued from page 6 Ian Paterson was often invited to be a judge, choosing the winning exhibit and I also went out to be a judge at least once. At that time, there was a strong contingent of German members in the ESC and they were keen exhibitors and hard workers and helped the Club to flourish. They have virtually all died off now. Sadly, none of their children took up the hobby so our German membership has disappeared. Perhaps in the 1980 s the Club House caught fire and was destroyed. There still is a Friends of Berlin Social Club in Edmonton - I think it is on the south side by the CHED radio building. I don t think there is any philatelic activity involved there. I think I have somewhere a list of the Friends of Berlin membership..it would take a lot of digging to find it. Maybe there are 35 or 40 members. One was Joe Garvey, the stamp dealer, and he was rather Hungarian! The Clubhouse burned down in They had postcards and I (Keith) have a few because they would often use them at shows and get special postmarks. They were a jolly bunch: the club kept the memories of the good old days alive and helped with integrating people into society here.. You ve dredged up lots of memories!

13 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 106, Number 10 Sudetenland Part 2 AtoZee.com Germany next sent an ultimatum to Czechoslovakia that the problem had to be resolved by midnight September 28, At the same time many infantry and armoured units moved close to the Czechoslovakian border.
