BULLETIN Volume 108 Number 5 President s Message Congratulations to the Edmonton Stamp Club and our 2019 Edmonton National Spring Show committee, headed by Kelly Liusz- Moser and Jim Lockau. In my opinion this year s Spring Show was an outstanding success. It continued the trend of building on the previous successful shows. We, in 2019 have not seen attendance, roughly 900 people, dealer participation [17], dealer satisfaction and number of stamp frames, over 100 since the Royal Show back in In addition, we had two well attended seminars, the first in many years. The success of a show of this size can only be achieved by the work of many club members. I must mention a few members whom put in stalwart service at the show in no particular order: Jeff Pacey, Ed Dykstra, Rod Verrier, Fred Tauber and Keith Spencer. I know this list is incomplete but so many contributed to the success of this show that it is not practical to name everyone who contributed to the success of this show. I want to thank those club members who attended the Spring Show and did wear their ESC ID badge. I did receive positive mention from visitors to the show on how welcoming and helpful our members were when approached by the visitors. The next important event to remember is the regional stamp club meeting and bourse in Red Deer on May 25. If you need a ride down to Red Deer or can take a passenger down to Red Deer, please let a member of the Board know. Meeting different collectors, seeing new material for sale and a 200-lot auction should be fun and worth the effort to attend the meeting in Red Deer. We need volunteers to give a short presentation to the club at our regular meetings. The topic is up to you. Please think of participating. If you can give a short 5-15-minute talk on a stamp, area of collecting, your collection, etc. please contact Keith Spence, Barend Wissink or any Board member. Park to the north of the school and use the main entrance at the south-east corner of the school. BULLETIN Volume 108, Number 5 RED DEER MEETING (May 25 th, 2019) A gathering for interested members of the Calgary Philatelic Society, the Edmonton Stamp Club and the Lethbridge Philatelic Society has been scheduled for Saturday 25th May The location has been set for the Liberty Christian Assembly (1B, 6315 Horn Street, Red Deer). It is also anticipated some members of the Calgary and Edmonton BNAPS Chapters will also use a separate meeting room at the facility at the same time. Outline hrs Presentations by Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge concerning recent activities, challenges and future plans. To be followed by open discussions and coordination for future plans. The target group would be board members, but members are welcome to attend hrs Circuit books from Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge would be available for viewing and purchases hrs Members tables at a cost of $5 each would be open for direct sales. Reservations will be limited and can be made directly to Jim Senecal ( ) on a first come basis. Note that the tables will be round dining tables Auction viewing. An auction limited to 200 lots will be conducted by the CPS Auction staff. Commission will be 10%. Initial limit of 6 lots per individual, minimum bid $ hrs Auction called 1600hrs (or earlier) end of gathering. DETAILS Meals no food will be provided. Individuals can bring lunches or go to the restaurant in the strip mall or a fast food outlet further north. Coffee will be available on an honor pay basis. Registration There is no entry charge, but we would ask all attendees to sign in to gage interest and allow for contact for future events. Those wishing to take part in the auction must register separately to obtain bidder numbers. Volunteers What we still need is a couple of volunteers willing to man the registration desk (in turns) and replenish the coffee dispensers. Please contact Jim Senecal. ( )

BULLETIN Volume 108, Number 5 An Irresistible Auction Lot This winter perusing the regular stamp club s meeting silent auction table there sits a lot of 7 mint stamps (Fig 1) under the owner s statement I do not know what these stamps are. A mystery with an itsy-bitsy opening bid. NO worry about explaining anything to She Who Must Be Obeyed! Darn, I should know what these stamps are, but I am experiencing a mind freeze and I do not know the identity of these stamps. I ask around me. I get answers such as I don t know, or I do not collect them. Like a shark I circle the silent auction table. Oh no another scavenger is homing in on this lot. I move and intercept. We talk. I point out that they are probably forgeries. He signed the bid sheet. He is gone so I wiggle over and raise the bid. Time has been declared and now I can scoop in and fondle my prize. I am home and find out that my memory is no longer that of a youth of 65 years. I must use a stamp identifier. Several stamp identifiers later I know these stamps are from the Republic of North Ingermanland. Where and what is North Ingermanland? North Ingermanland is a dead country, 9 July 1919 to 5 June Ingerland is located on the northern part of the Karelian Isthmus connecting Russia and Finland (Fig 2). The seven stamps in this lot (Scott #8-14) compose the second (last) set of this country. Counterfeits, particularly from the 1950 era abound. I found only two different overprints on the web for North Ingermanland stamps. Next page

14 14 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 108, Number 5 First (Fig 3) the overprint translates as Specimen. This overprint is on a Scott # 7, the last stamp in the first North Ingermanland stamp set. The second overprint was probably only overprinted on the second set of stamps. However, my interpretation of the information may be too precise. The second overprint was placed on North Ingermanland stamps after the Bolsheviks had reoccupied the capital city Kirjasalo and the Treaty of Tartu formalized the Russo/Finnish back to the pre-republic of North Ingermanland location. Some authors call the next overprint a Finish charity issue while others a North Ingermanland revenue stamp. The overprint translates Ingermanland prosperity. These overprinted stamps were printed in Finland in 1921 in quantities of 2,000 each only on the three stamps with denominations in marks (Fig 4). It probably is an example of the many the many counterfeits previously mentioned. Since I wrote this note The American Philatelist in their November 1919 published an article on North Ingermanland. These stamps were sold at face value. Also found for sale on my web search was an overprinted stamp with a printing error (Fig 5). According to my information this stamp was never overprinted officially. Richard Barnes
