3 3 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 107, Number 4 Congratulations The Edmonton Stamp Club has put on another successful Spring National Stamp Show. From 10AM Saturday morning until 4PM Sunday afternoon, there was a happy hum of stamp collectors in the Central Lions Seniors Centre north gym. Almost all of the chairs were occupied in front of the dealers for the best part of both days. There was continuous coming and going of individuals looking at both the Fun Frames and the Royal Frames. For the first time for me at the show I watched individuals stop and talk together particularly in front of the Fun Frames. The usual ESC club tables; Jeff Pacey and Irene Gagné at the Kids Table and Peter Kuester at the Circuit Books table were well attended. Grandparents specifically brought their grandkids to meet Jeff and be introduced to the of hobby stamp collecting. I met a couple that was enticed to the show from out of town because of the recommendation of a neighbor who enjoyed the Circuit Books so much last year. They went on to enjoy the show, meet fellow stamp collectors and visit the dealers. All members deserve to bask in the success of the 2018 Edmonton National Spring Stamp Show but I want to draw attention to those ESC members who made specific contributions to the show, Ed Dykstra, Chairman of the Spring Show Committee, Jim Lockau and Rod Vernier on Fun Frames, Fred Tauber administrator, Keith Spencer who had a lineup at the stamp collection evaluation table from the opening to the close of the show, Jeff Pacey and Warren Stein leading the setup and takedown of the frames and Kelly Liusz Moser for coordination of the frames, judges and everything else to do with the frames. The most prestigious recognition for work to enhancing philately and service to the Club is the award of The Philatelist of the Year. This award was announced at the Sunday Show Breakfast (will be presented at the Summer meeting, July 30 th ). I had the honor and pleasure to recognize Kelly Liusz-Moser as The Philatelist of the Year, Richard Barnes

10 10 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 107, Number 4 ESC Spring Show Ed Dykstra The Edmonton Spring National Stamp Show was by and large a great success. We on the organizing Committee hope that all who attended found some good stamps, covers or post cards. There was a fabulous array of collector supplies available thanks to Light House Canada for taking a couple of tables. Based in Montreal, we can be impressed that Pillippe Laperle came all the way here with supplies. Much gratitude to our President Richard Barnes for storing Phillippe s great stock of Lighthouse collector supplies. It is a pleasure to know that he was quite satisfied as far as sales are concerned. Success in the Bourse is important for all invested in it. The Exhibits were of a higher caliber not seen since The Royal we had here in 2012, according to Kelly Luisz Moser. This is big news as Exhibiting is a challenge to find participants is concerned. Great work Kelly, we appreciate your great work and thank you to you and your family too! On that note, we can be very thankful to Rod Verrier, for sponsoring the Fun Frames. There was a lot of enthusiasm shown by the participation of several of our club members. Rod took care of the Awards Breakfast as well. This turned out to be a good substitution for the Wine & Cheese Reception we had before. There were other attractions such as the Theme display about Peace Keeping and Show Covers to go with it. There was a very attractive orchid display as well. Right beside this great flower display, was Keith Spencer, doing yeoman s work evaluating many collections from many people right to the end of the show. Free!! Thanks Keith, for adding this great feature to have at our show. Another yeoman deserves much credit. Fred Tauber at the club table, taking care of everybody ticket sales selling show covers and of course producing yet another fabulous Show Bulletin! 1 Thanks Fred that is always a great undertaking and we thank you for putting that together. Stamp Shows is when we have opportunities to put in to our fabulous hobby. Many people worked at this attending planning meetings and making it all work together Dave Hetke took care of the frames with his son and great help form Warren Stein, our club secretary. Dave also made two new banners for the bridges, for 3 banners. Thanks Dave. (And for your patience too!) Dave Pearcy again invited judges to come and do the hard job of picking winners and awarding prizes. We thank all the judges for coming out and sharing their expertise and to Kevin O Reilly who supports our show all the

Peter Kuester helped with putting up many signs to direct people to the right place inside the Lion s Centre and outside as well with a couple of eye catching signs. He also sat at the circuits table. Ken Kluchky did his best to accommodate and help the Dealers set up and who were pleased to be here. They all had a pretty good show. Jeff Pacey was busy at the show with many young collectors coming to the Junior Table, managed very well by Jeff and Irene. Thanks, Jeff, for helping our hobby s future by encouraging these young people! The rest of your Show Committee members: Arif Sheena helping with advertising, Jim Lockau, as treasurer. There were many people helping with the set up and take down. The club membership can be very proud to have so many willing volunteers to make small work of a great show success! We hope you all had a chance to come to the show on at least one of the 2 days. Lots to do, lots to learn, lots to share. More than anything, we hope you all had a lot of fun. Most I was able to find but one group of stamps in particular left me with questions. What I received we readily identified as Yugoslavian Postal Tax Stamps (RA). However, many of them are not found in the Scott catalogue. Scott has a note saying that after 1977 the various republics within the Socialist Federation Republic of Yugoslavia ( {?}) fall beyond the scope of the Scott catalogue. The Michel catalogue did list all of these unlisted by Scott Postal Tax Stamps. I have assumed they are Yugoslavian Republic Postal Tax Stamps; Fig 1 [Mi 67], Fig 2 [Mi 97], Fig 3 [Mi 111] and Fig 4 [Mi 157]. Fig 1 Fig 2 Can any member confirm that these Postal Tax Stamps are actually issued by the various republics? I cannot find any of these stamps listed in the specific catalogues for the various countries that came together to form Yugoslavian prior to the formation of Yugoslavia or after their separation from Yugoslavia. Can anyone add further information as to what republics specifically issued each of these non-scott listed Postal Tax Stamps of Yugoslavia? Fig 3 Fig 4 Fig 5

16 16 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 107, Number 4 At auction I picked up a couple of albums of Kenmore Stamp Company Gold and Silver Alloy Postage Stamps that nobody else wanted. These stamps are all Sand Dune stamps. When I compare them to the metal foil Sand Dune stamps that I have previously purchased and now are in my Ajman through to Umm al Kaiwain albums these foil stamps match exactly as far as I can see. Can anyone tell me how to specifically identify Kenmore printed stamps from foil stamps made by other stamp printers? Am I correct in assuming that the Kenmore Stamp Company printed the foil stamps listed in the various Sand Dune catalogues ( Fig 5, Manama, Lord Baden-Powell, Mi 261) and (Fig 6, Sharjah, Mozart, Mi 735)? I have seen nothing in the literature on this topic. I was also asked to help identify and possibly price some Turkmenistan stamps not listed in Scott either in the stamp listing or the illegal listings. These stamps are fantasies probably made by our prolific fantasies printers in Lithuania. Most of these fantasies are topical stamps (Fig 7, James Bond 007). I found that there can be as much as triple the asking price from topical dealers as from traditional dealers selling by country. Such is my observation of pricing on the net. Next page Fig 6
