1 On September 13, 2017, Ruth Hughs, Commissioner, Texas Workforce Commission recognized four El Paso area employers and organizations who participated in the We Hire Vets program. Through We Hire Vets, an employer whose workforce must be composed of at least 10 percent military veterans were eligible to receive a We Hire Vets employer recognition decal to display on their storefront as well as an electronic decal to display on the employer s website. The Four El Paso-area employers recognized were 5P NH Holding Company LLC; American GI Forum; Inverness Technologies Inc.; and the Center for Employment Training El Paso. 2 Message from the Board Workforce Solutions Borderplex is pleased to present the Labor Market Review for September This issue examines how the workforce area performed during August The information presented in this newsletter was gathered from federal and state sources and pertains to the El Paso MSA, the Workforce Solutions Borderplex region, and the City of El Paso. Economically, the data in this report provides key information that can help leaders understand the gaps and focus on building a stronger region. Opportunities that remain to be addressed can be analyzed in future labor reports. As such, the workforce board will continue to analyze data and identify gaps so that skills development with employer partners are cultivated. This data also helps community and business leaders better understand the trends and dynamics of our community. The unemployment rate for the city of El Paso in August 2017 was at 4.6% which signified a 0.2% increase from the previous month. In addition, the unemployment rate for the city of El Paso decreased by 0.4% since last year. The unemployment rate for the city of El Paso was higher than the unemployment rate for the state of Texas (4.5%); and higher than the National unemployment rate (4.5%). Over the year, Labor Force increased by 4,197. The number of employed in the Borderplex area for the month of August 2017 was 346,950, which reflects a decrease of 1,026 from the previous month. Over the year, the number of employed increased by 5,742. The number of unemployed in the Borderplex area for the month of August 2017 was 17,602, which indicates an increase of 630 from the previous month. Over the year, the number of unemployed decreased by 1,545

These three Super Sectors represented 58% of the total nonfarm employment. The three Super Sectors with the least employment for the El Paso MSA in August 2017 were (1) Financial Activities; (2) Other Services and (3) Information.
