13 7. (PLANNING/SUSTAINABILITY) Wildlife and Natural Resources (10 points) CPW staff was engaged in giving feedback and recommendations on the CDTC's project proposal. Impacts to wildlife and habitat were evaluated for short-term and long-term impacts. During the project volunteers and staff will reduce wildlife interaction by practicing Leave No Trace ethics at both the worksite and campsite. Participants will minimally impact the surrounding landscapes by staying on durable surfaces and dispersing excavated materials to minimize impact of vegetation growth. This project directly focuses on protecting soil productivity by controlling erosion, minimizing trail braiding, and reducing users impacts on vegetation which will directly benefit wildlife and habitat. This is a long-established trail that has experienced thousands of users over decades. Since there are existing human impacts that have already degraded habitat values, this project will minimally effect habitat in the area.

20 710 10th Street Golden, CO Colorado Parks and Wildlife State Trails Program US Hwy 85 N Littleton, CO September 18, 2018 Dear Grant Review Committee: On behalf of the Colorado Mountain Club, I am please to support the Continental Divide Trail Coalition s (CDTC) application for funding for the Monarch Crest Trail Maintenance Project from Colorado Parks and Wildlife 2019 Non-Motorized Trails Grant Program. The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) has been facilitating recreation, education and conservation programs throughout the state since Our 6,500 members are primarily hikers, mountaineers and backcountry skiers who participate in over 3000 group trips annually. We recognize that outdoor recreation has a big impact on public lands and we strongly support stewardship and volunteer efforts to maintain trails and minimize resource impacts. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) is an incredible asset in Colorado for CMC members, local residents, and visitors to travel through some of the most scenic parts of our state. Unfortunately public land management agencies can rarely keep up with the increasing demand for outdoor recreation and partnership with volunteer groups and outdoor stewardship organizations are essential to maintain these icon trails and mountain landscapes. The U.S. Forest Service works closely with the CDTC in the stewardship of the Continental Divide Trail. Funding for this grant proposal would help to further the goals of both the Agency and CDTC by facilitating the engagement of volunteers to meet critical maintenance needs along the CDT. This grant would help rehabilitate a section of the CDT in the Pike San Isabel National Forest where an increase in user numbers has caused deteriorating conditions such as obsolete drainage structures, trail erosion, trail braiding and damage to fragile alpine vegetation. CDTC has demonstrated itself to be a sound partner with the passion and ability to accomplish a great deal on behalf of the CDT. I appreciate your consideration of their proposal and strongly support this project. Sincerely, Julie Mach Conservation Director, Colorado Mountain Club juliemach@cmc.org

22 Colorado Parks and Wildlife State Trails Program US Hwy 85 N Littleton, CO Dear Grant Review Committee: I am writing to express my support for the Continental Divide Trail Coalition s (CDTC) application for funding for the Monarch Crest Trail Maintenance Project from Colorado Parks and Wildlife 2019 Non-Motorized Trails Grant Program. The U.S. Forest Service works closely with the CDTC in the stewardship of the Continental Divide Trail. This grant would help rehabilitate a section of the CDT in the Pike San Isabel National Forest where an increase in user numbers has caused deteriorating conditions such as obsolete drainage structures, trail erosion, trail braiding and damage to fragile alpine vegetation. CDTC staff work hard to help build a strong coalition of individuals dedicated to the stewardship of the CDT. Since the program s inception in 2012, the number of volunteers engaged by the CDTC have increased steadily each year, with over 200 volunteers engaged in trail maintenance activities in 2018 totaling over 5,000 hours. If the grant is funded, the money will be well spent and the value of each dollar received will result in the exponential payback to the local and national trail communities. Further, this funding would increase CDTC s capacity to engage communities in hands-on, on-the-ground stewardship projects on the CDT, which in turn helps to inspire in these individuals an appreciation of, and support for, their public lands. The importance of the CDT to local communities cannot be overstated. As a business owner in Salida, I can personally confirm that CDT users have a large impact on the local economy. People from all over the world come to use the trail, spending money at local businesses. The CDT also provides important recreation opportunities for locals, enhancing quality of life and enjoyment for many people. Sincerely, Nate Porter, Owner, Salida Mountain Sports
