2 Greater Omaha Indicators Local Economy Published September Total Non-Farm Employment, Omaha MSA: 01 v 011 (thousands, seasonally adjusted) Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; Greater Omaha Chamber For the 1 months ending in August, the Omaha labor market added approximately 7,000 net new jobs, a 1.5 percent increase. The private sector added approximately 6,900 jobs during the same period, a 1.7 percent increase. The following sectors led job growth during this period: the Education and Healthcare Services sector added 3,100 jobs; the Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector added 3,100 jobs and the Professional and Business Services sector added, jobs. The unemployment rate was unchanged at.3 percent in July. Note: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the August unemployment rate next week. The pace of area homes sales remains above the 11,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate, with August sales up 19.3 percent compared to the same month last year. National Economy Second quarter Real Gross Domestic Product growth now stands at a downwardly revised 1.3 percent annual rate. New orders for durable goods declines 13. percent in August, the largest decline since January 008. New home sales fell slightly in August; however, low inventories helped to push the median price of new homes up 11. percent, the largest monthly increase on record. Existing home sales increased 7.8 percent in August, with the median sales price increasing 9.5 percent for the 1 months ending in August. Single-family housing starts increased 5.5 percent in August and are up 6.8 percent on a year-over-year basis. August retail sales increased 0.9 percent; however, gasoline sales (+5.5 percent) masked weakness in other categories. Core retail sales (sales excluding gasoline, autos and building materials) declined 0.1 percent.
