If you have not noticed it yet, it has been very cold for the end of 2014 and the start of WPS CHARITY AUCTION Report by Michael Zacharias Somehow it is just like last year. **** Just out: Canada Post has released images of it s 2015 Year of the Ram Chinese Lunar Year stamps. You can pre-order through the National Philatelic Center. (images and cost are shown on Page 6) **** My wife and I have just finished watching a very entertaining Gold Medal match between Canada and Russia. Definitely a nail bitter as the 2nd period ended and in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd period. **** Michael Zacharias has submitted a report on the Charity Auction held during our December meeting. Another strong turnout was had and Pictures on Page 5 the donated goods and baking were very well received. Three charities have been presented with cheques from Winnipeg Philatelic Society on behalf of the membership. **** And finally, articles, articles, articles. need them to keep coming in. Your Editor We Everyone who attended the December Charity Auction had a great time. It was fun as always and all money raised went to our usual 3 charities. Although attendance was slightly less than than usual, we managed to raise just under $ The club topped it off to that figure and the money raised was dispersed the following week. The money was split evenly at $300 and was donated to Osborne House Shelter for battered women, Siloam Mission, and Union Gospel Mission. 5 Buffalo Chips We had an excellent gathering for the 2014 Charity Auction.. Here are a few pictures from the crowd that was on hand that evening. Again many thanks to the runners, donators, bidders, and auctioneers for a job well done. 6 NOW IS IT THE YEAR OF THE GOAT OR YEAR OF THE RAM? January 8, 2015 Left is the International Rate Souvenir Sheet; above is a corner block example of the domestic Rate stamp; to the upper right is an example of the International Rate Booklet of 6; and finally to the right is the Transition souvenir sheet from the Year of the Horse to the Year of the Ram. The Year of the Ram domestic and international stamps measure 32 mm by 32 mm and the souvenir sheet measures 40 mm by 140 mm. Domestic stamps are available in a pane of 25 and international stamps are sold in booklets of six. The stamps are also available in an uncut press sheet. Single and souvenir sheet Official First Day Covers with Richmond Hill, Ontario as the cancellation site complete the issue. The stamps were designed by Hélène L'Heureux at Interaction Design and illustrated by Susan Scott with calligraphy by Ngan Siu-Mui. The series was printed by Lowe-Martin. The stamps variously incorporate foil and embossing and are tagged on all sides. The text on the stamps is in Traditional Chinese, English and French. Also on Canada Post s Website is a sneak peek of the new Sir John A MacDonald commemorative stamp. The Year of the Ram stamp is being issued as a Forever stamp in self-adhesive souvenir sheets of 12. This Forever stamp will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail oneounce price. Jan / WPS Buffalo / 6

7 Other issues from around the world for the Year of the Goat / Year of the Ram 2015 The sheep (value: CHF 1.90), adorns the new special issue stamp following the dragon, snake and horse. The motif was designed in the shape of a delicate silhouette and produced using ultramodern laser technology. The designer Stefan Erne chose the colour red, the symbol for luck in China, for the special commemorative sheetlet comprising four identical stamps. All the prints are affixed in highgrade gold foil embossing. The 4-stamp sheetlet is also cut in the shape of a sheep.. Guernsey Post released a series of stamps dedicated to the upcoming Year of the Goat. The series consists of six items that are scheduled to be put into circulation on the 28 th of January. These stamps represent the multicultural nature of New Zealand. This is shown on these stamps through Chinese calligraphy, papercutting and line art illustration against backgrounds that represent New Zealand as the land of the long white cloud. 80c Pictogram Many modern day Chinese characters are derived from pictograms stylised drawings of the object they represent. The pictogram on this stamp is the Chinese character for sheep, conveying both the appearance and attributes of a sheep. $1.40 Paper-cut Sheep In China, paper-cuts are used extensively as home decorations and can be affixed to practically anything, from walls to mirrors and even lanterns to bring good luck. This stamp shows a paper-cut design of a sheep, decorated in traditional Chinese patterns of beauty and tranquility. $2.00 Sheep in New Zealand Sheep remain an important part of the New Zealand economy, with approximately seven sheep to every person living in New Zealand. This stamp illustrates the tranquil setting of New Zealand s pastures, perfect for rearing sheep. $2.50 Church of the Good Shepherd The Church of the Good Shepherd was the first church built in the South Island s Mackenzie Basin in 1935 and sits next to the stunning Lake Tekapo. The stamp shows an illustration of the church with a Chinese kite and long white cloud, reflecting the multicultural nature of New Zealand. Jan / WPS Buffalo / 7
