1 THE ARISTOCRATS OF PHILATELY BY Alf Brooks February Volume XXXVIII, No. 5 $1 00 In 1976 Philadelphia hosted INTERPHIL 76, a large show that commemorated the 200 th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America. One of the prominent features of the Show was an exhibit organized by Dr. Norman Hubbard, The Aristocrats of Philately. I first saw this term a few months ago when I read an item describing a philatelic auction in Paris. The prominent item of the sale was a block of four, with one stamp têtebêche, of the one-franc Cérès issue of France, The estimated price of this item was euros; it eventually sold for 820,000 euros (at today s exchange rate approximately $1,351,000). My subsequent inquiries led me to Ellen Peachey at the American Philatelic Society Library. Ellen was able to send me information about the Aristocrats and a copy of the American Philatelist of May 1976, which featured this exhibit with colour reproductions of the items that Dr. Hubbard had assembled for this magnificent display. I am in debt to Ellen Peachey and the American Philatelic Society for much of the information in this article, in which I will feature some of the Aristocrats, and to the late Dr. Hubbard who wrote the original article; our WPS Library now has the May 1976 American Philatelist, where you can find brief descriptions and illustrations of all the items displayed. UNITED STATES. 2 INVERTED CENTERS OF 1901 Six stamps were issued to mark the Pan- American Exposition held in Buffalo, NY. Three appeared with some inverted centers; the 2-cent, picturing a railway train, the Empire State Express, is the rarest of the three inverted centers. HAWAIIAN MISSIONARIES OF 1851 The first stamps of Hawaii, issued in 1851, were so-called because they were largely used by Christian missionaries writing to people in the USA. The cover was found in 1903 with some papers about to be burned. The 5 paid the Hawaii postage, the 2 paid the ship rate from Hawaii to the USA, and the pair of 3 stamps paid the US postage. This cover is by far the most important item in Hawaiian philately and one of the greatest covers in the world. CANADA. 2 ON LAID PAPER 0F 1868 The first issue of the Dominion of Canada was the large queens of April 1, The majority of the stamps were printed on wove paper, but a few of the 1, 2 and 3 cent values were printed on horizontally laid paper. There was controversy for years as to whether the 2 even existed on laid paper; in 1976 the philatelic world knew of two. continued on page 4 THE BUFFALO PUBLICATION OF THE WINNIPEG PHILATELIC SOCIETY Western Canada's Oldest Stamp Club Website: INSIDE THIS ISSUE Aristocrats of Philately 1, 4 Member's Adlets 2, 6 Book Review 3 Spot the Variety Answer 3 Early Winnipeg Postmarks 5 Variety Corner 6

3 MICHEL EUROPE 2003/2004 VOL. 3 - NORTH & NORTHWEST EUROPE MICHEL EUROPE 2003/2004 VOL. 4 - EAST EUROPE A REVIEW BY ALF BROOKS With the recent release of these two volumes Michel completes its euroization of Europe s stamps in its catalogues. These two have and pages respectively, for a total of pages total for the four European catalogues. Both catalogues were completely revised and updated. Volume three sees large increases for some issues of the Netherlands, Belgian FDC s and for some issues of Great Britain. For Ireland and Luxembourg survey tables appear for extensive definitive series; stamp booklet entries were added to. For volume four stamps prices generally remained stable, with some notable price changes seen in the stamps of Moldova, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus and Hungary. Also received were the following Michel catalogues: - Picture Postcard and Thematic Postal Stationery 2003/ Postal Stationery Europe West 2003/2004 ANSWER TO SPOT THE VARIETY 15 3 / February / The Buffalo
4 THE ARISTOCRATS OF PHILATELY continued from page 1 BRITISH GUIANA. 1 OF 1856 The 1 magenta was in 1976 the most valuable single stamp in the world, as determined by sale price (I believe that the yellow 3 skilling banco of Sweden, 1855, now holds that position). The stamp was found by a young boy in 1873 and subsequently changed hands many times. BRAZIL. SE-TENANT STRIP OF 1843 Nicknamed bullseyes because of their design, these second of the world s postage stamps were printed on one plate with eighteen each of the 30, 60 and 90 reis. The vertical strip of three is the only one known in existence. Dr. Hubbard s article illustrates and describes thirty-one Aristocrats. As collectors we all have aristocrats in our collections, items that are valuable to each of us in various ways, not necessarily because of any potential sale value. Have a look at the others that were part of the exhibit, the ultimate Aristocrats. 4 / February / The Buffalo
