We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. 2 P AGE 2 V OLUME 18, NO. 11 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT.WALT BERRY Our October meeting was another great example of friends coming together to share a common interest in stamp collecting each member with their own individual challenge to complete their area of interest. Stamp collecting really has no boundaries for what to collect / how to collect or how one assembles what they have in their holdings. Some are interested in specific countries, stamps reflecting their chosen occupation, a topic such as birds, flowers, ships, buildings the only limitation is your imagination. This does present a challenge to collectors who are interested in buying & selling items from their collection as one is never sure what others would be interested in purchasing. One fact positive is that members are always looking for a bargain overlooked by others. Our October auction of member s better material was a mild success with some good items finding a new home in someone s collection while there were many unsold items being returned to the owners. We shall try another auction of better material sometime in the future. As always the meeting was an opportunity to share stories & fellowship with others and a super chance to talk about YOUR area of interest. A reminder that our December meeting will be Treat night bring in a sampling of your favourite treat to share with others and the President s funny money auction of items donated by members. NO CASH MONEY will be required just your stash of President s money. Start revising your collection holdings to see what you have to donate for a fun evening. If you are so inclined, there will be a small gift exchange bring a gift take a gift. What s coming up... 3 T HE BULLETIN P AGE 3 ANOTHER MEASURED MOMENT...D.J. JIM MEASURES TRISTAN DA CUNHA This tiny outpost of the British Empire in the Southern Atlantic is administered as a dependency of St. Helena. However, since 1952 it has issued its own postage stamps. Prior to that time they had a local postal service that used stamps produced locally by Allan Crawford for the population of only 300 souls, or perhaps a few more the last census in 1988 counted only 313 on the island. These local stamps had a value of 4 Potatoes, although they also showed a British value of 1d and the British flag. No notice of these local stamps was taken until 10 May 1946, when they were attached to a petition requesting that they be allowed to have their own Official postage stamps. Judging by auction catalogues that I have seen, these early local stamps, although not listed by Scott, are worth much more than any of the stamps that are listed.
4 Here is a lovely letter from Kathy Hartley of the VGG Philatelic Research Foundation, with an invite to all of us. Check out their website and think about a visit to the Library! WALLPAPER? From the London Times, 1841: A young lady, being desirous of covering her dressing room with canceled postage stamps, has so far been encouraged in her wish by private friends as to have succeeded in collecting 16,000. These, however, being insufficient, we will greatly be obliged if any good-natured person who may have these (otherwise useless) articles at their disposal, would assist her in her whimsical project. Address: Mr. Butt s, Gover, Leadenhall Street; or Mr. Marshall s, Jeweler, Hackney. The stamps in question would be the one penny black (above) and the two pence blue!
5 Scott #112 India Postage Two Annas, Six Pies This interesting item, courtesy of John Cortan, is an example of a common stamp of low face value and low catalogue value, that nevertheless is a terrific addition to a collection. The feature, of course, is the beautiful, clear cancel. Ambala is a city in north central India, in the state of Haryana. It is an important military base for both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force. The airport was a British Royal Air Force Base in the days of British rule in India; in 1948 of course it became an Indian Air Force base at the time of independence, but is used only for military and government flights. The cancellation shown here, dated 17 February 1938, was of course done under the British Mandate and wouldn t it be nice to have the complete cover, to see just where this item was sent!!! The regular stamp is Scott#169. October Reserve Auction Was our Reserve Auction a success? Well, if you, like I, obtained some very nice material for your collection, you might consider it successful. Many lots were sold and the club accounts were increased by over $70.00 not a bad result. It is unfortunate that many unsold lots were returned to the owners. I wonder if the problem is that many lots were aimed at very narrow collecting interests and our group is a bit small to reflect some of those interests. Perhaps we need that list of what our members collecting interests are, so we know what might sell. Something to think about when we do this again, because we will do it again!
