Maternal and Paid Parental Leave A club contacted CCV regarding an employee's forthcoming Maternity Leave. This raises not only the matter of the Leave, but also the Paid Parental Leave Scheme. Maternity Leave is provided for in the National Employment Standards (NES). Parental leave is leave that can be taken when: an employee gives birth an employee's spouse or de facto partner gives birth an employee adopts a child under 16 years of age. Employees are entitled to 12 months of unpaid parental leave. They can also request an additional 12 months of leave. Paid Parental Leave (PPL) is a Commonwealth Government scheme to provide short-term payment to mothers who are on leave to care for a new-

3 born or newly adopted child. PPL is fully funded by the Commonwealth, and consists of a maximum 18 weeks' pay at $695 (pretax) pw. There are eligibility criteria: the payment is made only to the mother, or adopting parent the employee must have worked for 10 of the previous 13 months, for a minimum of 330 hours - approximately one day per week there must not have been a gap of more than eight weeks between consecutive work days it is available to full-time, part-time and casual workers The process is really quite straightforward - the employee must register with Centrelink who will determine eligibility. If the employee is eligible to receive the PPL, Centrelink contacts the employer and makes arrangements to provide the payment, which is then paid by the employer according to the normal pay schedule. The PPL cannot be made at half-pay; it must be the full rate for the agreed period. Employers are NOT obliged to make superannuation contributions based on the PPL. Employees may make arrangements to sacrifice part or all post-tax PPL into their superannuation.

Child Safety Standards Victoria's Child Safety Standards apply to all sporting organisations and individuals associated with them. This

5 includes not only paid staff, but also Board members and volunteers. VicSport has created some very helpful guides to compliance, and is also open to direct contact from clubs on this matter. Energy sourcing This week our office has received a few calls from managers who are increasingly startled by their clubs rising gas and electricity costs. Sporting clubs with illuminated outdoor facilities as well as clubs with gaming or bistro facilities are segments of our industry with large electricity consumption, most of which cannot possibly be covered by increasing membership fees. When was the last time your club went to market to see if better options were available? Don t panic, help is at hand through CCV s reliable and experienced Energy Consultant Partners. Letter to clubs from United Voice Several clubs called CCV this week in response to a letter from the hospitality workers' union, United Voice. The letter asks clubs to make a representation to the Fair Work Commission on the matter before it in relation to hospitality penalty rates. Of course the decision on how to respond is a matter for each club; however we have advised those members who have sought CCV's view that it would not be helpful to accede to the UV request. nless your club decides otherwise, there is no need for any action arising from the letter.
