One of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world, housing a treasure trove of more than 35,000 items inspired by human experiences with the sea.

Guests can also explore the USS Monitor Exhibit which memorializes the career of the ship in a 63,500 square foot space.

1 OLLI at NC State University Virginia s Historic Peninsula Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown October 3-5, 2018 PROGRAM OVERVIEW DAY 1 Wednesday, October 3, 2018 Depart McKimmon Center on luxury motor coach. Arrive in the historic peninsula and your first stop will be the Mariner s Museum in Newport News, VA. One of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world, housing a treasure trove of more than 35,000 items inspired by human experiences with the sea. The museum illustrates the spirit of seafaring adventure, assembling an internationally renowned and diverse collection of maritime artifacts. Guests can also explore the USS Monitor Exhibit which memorializes the career of the ship in a 63,500 square foot space. The center's galleries relive the Civil War battle of the iron-clads, USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia, which changed Naval warfare forever. This exhibit is world-class and one of the country's premier Civil War attractions. Before departing, guests can browse the Museum Shop, which features an extensive collection of maritime books and gifts for nautical enthusiasts of all ages. A boxed lunch will be served at the museum. Then, check-in to the Hampton Inn & Suites Newport News before departing for an evening out at an area restaurant.

2 DAY 2 Thursday, October 4, 2018 After breakfast at the hotel, depart with your guide the charming town of Williamsburg. A dedicated, licensed tour guide will provide interesting and informative narration during the ride about the historic Virginia Peninsula and the Coastal Virginia area. Experience a half day touring this living museum, with admission ticket providing entry into the many exhibition buildings, including the Capitol and the Governor s Palace. See the introductory film, Story of a Patriot, tour historic homes, public buildings and 18th century craft shops where costumed hosts recreate the sights and sounds of America 200 years ago. Lunch will take place in the King s Arms Tavern, an authentic Colonial Tavern within Colonial Williamsburg. That afternoon, embark on a walking tour of the campus of The College of William & Mary. Located in downtown colonial Williamsburg, history abounds at the second-oldest college in the nation and alma mater of Thomas Jefferson. Following the tour, enjoy free time to shop and browse in the many unique specialty shops in Merchants Square. Guests may dine on their own for dinner in one of the Colonial Taverns or in Merchants Square. The guide will point out all of the dining options as they pass through town. DAY 3 Friday, October 5, 2018 Following breakfast at the hotel, guests will spend the morning on a guided tour at Jamestown Settlement. Established in 1607, this was the first permanent settlement in the New World. Guests will enjoy touring the recreated village of Jamestown which chronicles the nation s 17th century beginnings in Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and western central African cultures. Jamestown represents an enduring legacy of language, culture and government. Through an introductory film, "1607: A Nation Takes Root," and expansive 30,000 square foot indoor exhibition galleries, guests will discover the political, social and economic factors that led to the colonization of the New World, the culture of the Powhatan Indians of coastal Virginia at the time of the English arrival, and the first century of the Virginia colony when Jamestown served as its capital. Outside, history comes alive in re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, a colonial fort, and the three ships - Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery - that transported English colonists to Virginia in Costumed historical interpreters demonstrate work and everyday life of the era and engage visitors in a variety of activities. Lunch will be on your own in the Jamestown Café and there will be time to browse the beautiful gift shop for unique "Made in Virginia" items.

In the outdoor living-history areas, guests can witness artillery demonstrations, drill with wooden muskets at a re-created Continental Army encampment and explore a Revolution-era farm based on a real-life 18th-century family.
