4 FEMA NFIP Orange County began participating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in the 1970 s. County s participation enables citizens to purchase flood insurance as a protection against flood losses.

6 FEMA CRS Orange County began participating in the CRS Program in The CRS program rewards communities which undertake floodplain activities beyond NFIP requirements. Orange County has Class 5 rating which means residents of Orange County are receiving a maximum discount of 25% on their flood insurance premium.

8 Flood Insurance Flood insurance is not just for properties located in the 100-year floodplain. 25% of flood insurance claims are for structures outside the 100-year floodplain. Homeowners, renters, and business owners located outside the 100-year floodplain can purchase standard policies or reduced-rate preferred risk policies.

19 FIRM Map How is FIRM Map used? Issue flood zone determinations Contact Stormwater Mgmt. to determine correct flood zone designation. Floodplain can be viewed on County s InfoMap and Property Appraiser. Also available on FEMA Website. (FEMA Flood Map Service Center)

Issue floodplain permits New development located within 100 year flood zone Complete and submit an application Processed and a hold is placed on building permit until Elevation Certificate is submitted and accepted. Confirmation that structure is built 1 above the 100-year flood elevation.

26 County Efforts Master Plan Updates In 2014 Updates to the Watershed Master Plans were initiated. Updates will provide: Better Floodplain & Risk Management Enhanced Primary Drainage System Inventory Standardize GIS based Watershed Models Greater Detail
27 County Efforts Identify unmapped flood zone areas Stormwater Mgmt. is using GIS and Master Plans to identify high risk areas. FEMA will be notified through the Letter of Map Change process. FEMA will update the FIRMs and assign a floodplain designation. Identify unmapped flood zone area Mapped FEMA flood zone area
28 County Efforts CRS 2017 Manual 3-year cycle CRS verification visit on April 4th. New CRS 2017 Manual replaces 2007 Manual. No Major impacts to County s CRS Rating. Current Class 5 Rating remains.
