2 Background Natural disasters, in particular earthquake and typhoons, are endemic in the ASEAN region and occurring with increasing frequency and severity. With rapid growth in economic and infrastructure development as well as urban population density across the region in recent years, there is a greater need for coordinated effort and collaboration amongst academics, insurance industry practitioners, governmental agencies and other relevant parties to address the potential threats, manage the risks and mitigate the economic, social and environmental impact posed by such natural disasters. At the ASEAN Insurance Council (AIC) meeting in November 2007, a suggestion was made for a gathering of academic experts specialising in Asian natural disaster research, insurance practitioners and other relevant public and private sector organisations to facilitate dialogue, information exchange and initiate appropriate action. To spearhead this project, the ASEAN Natural Disasters Research Works Sharing (ANDREWS) Committee was formed under the auspices of the AIC, comprising representatives from various technical universities and relevant research institutes in ASEAN. 4 I WHO will benefit Academics and University Professors engaged in natural catastrophe related research a. Academics will be able to enrich their existing research through sharing their latest research and findings with their peers from other countries. b. There will be opportunities for formal and informal information sharing between participants, practitioners and other academics. c. This Forum will help enhance the academics research by facilitating understanding of the cultural, social and economic impact that natural catastrophe have on other countries and regions. d. This Forum will provide the stepping stone to create a networking platform to facilitate further discussion, joint research and initiatives. III Officials from Government or related Agencies, Bodies and Organisations interested or involved in Natural Disaster Mitigation a. Officials from Government agencies, bodies and organisations will be able to learn the latest findings relating to disaster mitigation from academics and practitioners from other countries. b. This Forum will provide opportunities for officials from government agencies to network and share information and cutting-edge ideas on natural disaster mitigation and risk management with their counterparts from the other ASEAN countries. c. The information and knowledge gathered from this Forum will provide inputs to further enhance the existing risk transfer mechanism in their respective countries that will ultimately help reduce the government budgetary obligations. d. The networking opportunities during this Forum will help facilitate further discussion and inter-governmental initiatives focusing on social, economic and physical risk mitigation. II Insurance Industry Practitioners a. Insurance practitioners in the ASEAN region will be exposed to the latest and up-to-date research on natural catastrophes b. This Forum will facilitate better understanding by practitioners of the catastrophe risk factors in the various regions in ASEAN, which will enable them to be more accurate in their risk assessment and pricing. c. Practitioners will be exposed to the various risk management techniques specifically addressing loss mitigation in the event of natural catastrophes. d. There will be opportunities to network with other practitioners in other countries in the region and share experiences, practices and techniques relating to catastrophe risk management and underwriting. e. This Forum will provide a platform to facilitate further discussion and initiatives between practitioners in ASEAN in relation to the equitable sharing and spreading of natural catastrophe risks. IVTechnical and Academic Students a. As future scientists and engineers, this Forum will help create greater awareness of the tremendous damage that natural catastrophes can cause. b. This Forum will also help raise the students interest and place greater focus on study and research in the areas of natural catastrophe and risk mitigation initiatives.

A 50% refund of the programme fee will be allowed if such cancellation notice is received by 1 Jul No refunds will be made for cancellations notified after 1 Jul ACCOMMODATION Accommodation is not included in the programme fee. SHUTTLE TRANSPORTATION Arrangements will be made for shuttle transportation at certain scheduled times between Victoria Hotel and Hotel Grand Park City Hall before and after the forum sessions, as well as between Hotel Grand Park City Hall and NTU for the visits to the Earth Observatory of Singapore and the Protective Engineering Laboratory. 6 about AIC The ASEAN Insurance Council (AIC) was formed in 1978 with the aim of fostering regional cooperation amongst the private sector insurance industries in the various ASEAN countries, in the same spirit of friendship and cooperation as embodied in the ASEAN Declaration of Representation at the AIC is through the life and non-life insurance associations of the various ASEAN countries, of which there are currently 12 member associations from seven ASEAN countries, namely Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Among the more notable regional projects embarked on by the AIC, which was granted official ASEAN NGO status in 1983, is a project to introduce a green card system to facilitate hassle-free customs clearance for cargo trucks at all land-based border checkpoints that will help boost intra-asean trade. about NTU Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a research-intensive university with globally acknowledged strengths in science and engineering.
