3 SYNOPSIS OF THE TALKS & SPEAKERS CORNER: Er. Chong Kee Sen Director IES Past President Managing and Mitigating Consulting Engineers Risks Engineers play a vital role in construction projects. Typical duties that are carried out by the engineer include design or supervision including the role of qualified person for approval or works or perhaps even contract administrator and certifier. Engineers may face a number of challenges, risks and liabilities that arise by virtue of the roles that they play in construction contracts. It is important then for engineers to be aware of their potential roles, risks and liabilities, and how to best manage or mitigate them. Er. Chong Kee Sen, the director of, IES past president, and also the president of the NTU Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (NCEEAA), draws from his experience to present, discuss and provide a guide to the engineer s role in the modern construction landscape and how the engineer can manage or mitigate any pitfalls in the industry. It is hoped that this seminar will serve as a practical guide to all engineers, be they new to the industry or long-time engineers. Mr Daniel Tay Partner A Legal Guide to the Engineer s Legal Risks and Liabilities in the Construction Landscape Engineers may owe both contractual and legal duties to the employerdeveloper-contractor or perhaps even the public, and their important roles often mean the possibility of professional liability for their work carried out either as designer, qualified person or sometimes as contract administrator. When damage or defects occur or perhaps disputes arise in the construction project, blame could fall on the engineer who may be charged in Court or become a party in arbitration or Court proceedings. Daniel Tay, a partner of, a specialised construction law practice will present on the legal risks and liabilities that engineers are likely to face in the construction industry, with reference and discussion on applicable law and cases. This seminar is intended to shed light on the legal challenges engineers may encounter in the modern construction landscape.

Often these risks are not discussed until issues arise and legal suits follow. Some of these risks are insurable and transferable to an underwriter who understands your profession and industry. What is the solution available in the market? How do you ensure that your risks are adequately covered and are there areas that cannot be covered? Ms Emily Poh, the Head of Executive and Professional Lines for Berkshire Hathaway Company (BHSI) in Singapore and Malaysia, will share her insight on these issues.

All registration must be submitted with the completed on-line Registration Form. Closing Date & Payment The closing date for registering for the seminar shall be by Thursday, 24 September The payment via credit card, paypal and invoice should be settled at least 3 business days before the event. Confirmation of Registration Confirmation of registration will be given 5 business days prior to the seminar via . We reserve the right to allow only confirmed registrants to attend the event. Refunds and Cancellations No refunds will be made for withdrawals. Replacement will be allowed only if written notice is received by us at least 3 business days before the seminar. However, when an IES or ILAS member is replaced by a non-member, the participant shall pay the difference in the relevant fees at least 3 business days before the seminar. Course Cancellation/Postponement Changes in venue, date, time and speakers for the Events can occur due to unforeseen circumstances. The Committee reserves the full right to cancel or postpone the Event under such circumstances without prior reasons. Every effort, however, will be made to inform the participants or contact person of any cancellation or postponement. Fees will be refunded in FULL if the Event is cancelled by the organizer.
