Atkinson, THAT the September 6, 2017 minutes be approved. CARRIED B. BUSINESS ARISING 4. DELEGATIONS NIL 5. BUSINESS (i) New Members Introduction The Committee members introduced themselves round table. The Committee amended the order of the agenda and proceeded to Item 5 (iv). Page 3 of 7

4 Page 2 (iv) GIS Mapping How Can It Assist Public Art? D. Griffin, GIS Mapping Supervisor was present to discuss how the GIS system can assist with mapping Public Art. Information included: Various mapping options Sign in options Method for uploading information Comments and questions included: Can categories be created? o Yes, once more information is uploaded categories could be created. Could the annual Art Walk be incorporated? o Yes. The example of Bellingham was provided. Could walking/driving tours be incorporated into the map? o Yes, there is the ability to add tour maps. Access for the Public Art Committee could be granted o Suggestion to have the Committee members log in and test over the next few weeks o D. Griffin to distribute login details to the Committee. Suggestion to involve Quest University students to map the art and provide background information Suggestion to apply for a summer student grant in order to complete this project Suggestion to set the following criteria: o Artist s name o Name of piece o Medium o Funded by o Age etc. Conversation on inclusion of architecture Suggestion to include history of art in Squamish o This could be a later addition Primary focus on Public Art mapping and to involve the Arts Council and Squamish Nation in the next steps Suggestion to communicate with Squamish Nation on the inclusion of any Squamish Nation art within the mapping program Discussion on embedding into Squamish.ca or to include it on the open data site data.squamish.ca o Open data was explained and discussed Plan to go live at the next Public Art Committee meeting. (i) Show and Tell F. Solar was not in attendance to present. D. Guest, Film & Event Manaer showed some pictures of basketball courts as art. Page 4 of 7

5 Page 3 (ii) City of Calgary Public Art Policy D. Guest presented on the suspension of the City of Calgary Public Art Policy. Information included: The suspension of the Public Art Policy in the City of Calgary due to poor public reaction to the Bowfort Towers Project Discussion on the importance of the public engagement process Discussion on blind proposals and the pros and cons Discussion on setting criterion when putting out proposals for Public Art Suggestion to allocate some projects to certain cultural community groups if the interest is there. (iii) Stan Clarke Park Mosaic D. Guest, provided the following update on the Stan Clarke Park Mosaic: Conversation with Public Works and with Artists o Staff conversation included: Bridges Continue to cover through the winter and stop ploughing and snow clearing - will be done by shovel only Shark grip sealant which has texture to prevent slips 2018 Spring/Summer project Wings of the mosaic need to be considered 2018 budget consideration (Capital Project Management) o Conversation with Bruce Walter, Mosaic Restoration Specialist One option is to infill around the intact pieces with asphalt o Mosaic is 20 years old o It is thought that most damage happened with new snow removal equipment. Staff recommendation: o Restoration of the wings of the mosaic by hiring a specialist o Sealant would be scraped off on the centre portion o Long term recommendation is to remove the centre portion o Re-install a commemorative sign which includes a photo of the intact mosaic. Questions and comments included: Suggestion to coat the centre piece to make it last longer Asphalt could be used to maintain the centre piece and would be applied by Public Works with the presence/supervision of an artist o D. Guest to bring back a final cost on the restoration of the mosaic o D. Guest to discuss with G. Buxton re including as a capital project Discussion on the restoration of the wings of the mosaic o Cost is between $2,000 to $4,000 o D. Guest to bring back final cost options (with and without wing restoration) for the Committee s consideration Committee to visit the mosaic after the meeting is terminated. Page 5 of 7

Guest discussed: Budget o Only addition is SAC Mural Project at Clarke and Guildford BC Hydro Project Update o Installation within the next 3-4 weeks o Howe Sound students working on their box design o Update on the final poetry application o Suggestion to add the hydro boxes onto the GIS mapping system Requested date of next meeting November 1 to November 8 o The Committee was in agreement to move the next meeting to November 8 th. 6. COUNCIL A. STATUS OF RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL B. REFERRALS FROM COUNCIL 7. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION Discussion on the Truth and Reconciliation pole at the Cheakamus Centre o Suggestion for a Truth and Reconciliation public art piece in 2018 Feedback from an artist who had completed a mural for the Public Art Committee o No review was carried out from the Committee o Sheen of the paint was altered by pencil marks o Directive for mural height wasn t provided o Suggestion to assign a committee member to oversee the completion of future projects Feedback from the Brennan Park Mural o Mural has been completed on plywood versus directly on the wall o The decision was made in conjunction with Facilities staff o Committee to assign a liaison to future projects o D. Guest to find out if the panels have been sealed Salmon sculpture near the shopping centre looks damaged o D. Guest to coordinate an assessment of the damage Clarification on Open Art Walls was sought: o D. Guest to the Committee with information Discussion on fixing the tagging on the Under Pass Mural Show and tell theme on Graphic Art Graffiti cover up inconsistency with paint colours o D. Guest to invite Public Works staff to come to a Public Art Committee meeting o Committee to think of examples of issues for Public Works consideration Page 6 of 7
