3 Introduction About the report For the third year in a row, Visit publishes a benchmark study of the performance of European nations in terms of bednights. This year s report analyses the development of bednights in Europe during as well as during 2009, which is the most recent year in European statistics. s performance compared to other European destinations is identified and as a special feature the report analyses the development of market shares of important source markets. The report contains a brief summary of results followed by tables, divided into three parts: Part 1 compares the European nations tourism performance in their function as tourism destinations. Winner and loser destinations in terms of bednight growth are identified. Part 2 identifies the most important source markets for European tourism, and the development in Europe of the source markets is analysed. Part 3 analyses the development of market shares in Europe from selected source markets. These markets include the Norwegian, Swedish, German, Dutch and British source markets. Sources and methodology The European market for tourism is defined by all forms of registered commercial bednights within 29 European countries. Bednights reported by the following countries are comprised:,,,,, the ublic,,,,,,,,,,,,, the,,,,,,,,, and. Due to incomplete data series the very important holiday destination, Greece, is not included in this report. The analysis is primarily based on commercial bednight statistics reported in the TourMIS tourism statistics system, powered by the Economic University of Vienna. Other data sources are the Euro-Stat office under the European Commission and publications by different National Tourist Offices and the National Statistical Authorities. The statistics include all forms of commercial accommodations, which apart from hotel bednights to some extent also include overnights in hostels, bed & breakfast units, holiday cottages and campgrounds. Please note that the range of registration of bednights in holiday cottages/homes varies from country to country. While all bednights in rented holiday homes are included in the Danish statistics, bednights in rented holiday homes are included only partially in other countries. The analysis is based on data gathered in the period September to November 2010, and the report has been compiled by business consultant Claus Sager and Visit. 2

4 Main Findings Benchmark of European Destinations (Part I) 2009 a year of crisis 2009 represented a year of serious decline for almost all European countries. Only and the experienced a weak increase in bednights, due to increasing domestic tourism. With Brød regard to 1foreign bednights all European destinations, except, experienced a negative development. On average, foreign bednights in the reporting European destinations declined by -7,8 percent. Due to the strong dependency of the German market, which during 2009 only had a minor decline in demand for tourism to neighbouring countries, was among the destinations in Europe experiencing the smallest loss in the number of foreign bednights. Trends The decline of foreign bednights during 2009 had a significant negative impact on the growth rate of European tourism during the whole decade. During the total analysed period , the number of commercial bednights in the 29 European nations comprised in this report grew by only 0,0 percent annually. Behind this apparent stagnation of tourism in Europe, lies many years of growth followed by severe loss during The number of international bednights grew by 0,1 percent annually, also due to the significant decline experienced in Winner destinations in terms of annual average growth rates during were the in terms of bednight numbers small nations like, the Baltic countries,, and. Among the traditional Western European countries only and reported annual growth rates of international bednights well above the European average. s performance With an average yearly decline of 2 percent in the number of international bednights, was one of the worst performing European destinations in the foreign bednight segment. Due to the increase of domestic tourism throughout the decade, performed better (no. 16) in the development of total bednights, but still below the European average. Despite the significant loss of foreign bednigts remains, in a European context, a significant destination as the 11th largest destination in terms of international bednights. 5 Main Findings Development of Source Markets (Part II) Top 5 Source Markets 2009 Key source markets in European tourism Part 2 analyses the growth of primary source markets for tourism in Europe. The aggregated Brød volume 1 of bednights in the European countries analysed in this report sums up to million bednights. In this European sample 958 million bednights were registered Brød as 2international, corresponding to a share of 42 percent. The in terms of bednight volumes largest national source markets for tourism in Europe are, Great Britain and the. Also, the US,, and Russia are important, though secondary, source markets for tourism in Europe. Growing source markets The fastest growing national source markets for European tourism during the total benchmark period were the Chinese, Russian, Polish and Spanish markets. On average, these markets grew by more than 5 percent yearly during the benchmark period. Also the other Southern European markets showed positive growth rates, accompanied by the Norwegian and Finnish source markets. According to the study, the most significant markets in decline were the Japanese, German, American and British source markets. s performance underperformed on many important source markets, especially the Chinese market, which in a European context is a growth market. The Swedish bednights also fell seriously in at a faster pace than in other European countries. Also the important German source market has decreased more in than in other European countries. On the positive side, performed better than the European average on other 6 source markets. These include the two fast growing southern European markets and, as well as the. 6 Main Findings Development of Market Shares (Part III) Market shares Part 3 Brød illustrates 1 the real winners and losers in European tourism, not in terms of volumes but in terms of relative market shares. Through an analysis of the development of the relative market shares in the European destinations, it is identified which destinations have Brød obtained 2a larger share or a smaller share - of international tourism in Europe. According to the analysis,,, and are the real winners in European tourism. These destinations have increased their market share of international tourism in Europe significantly. and have succeeded in obtaining a higher share of the world s largest tourism source market,, and this is one explanation to the success of the two destinations. The study estimates that at the beginning of the decade had a share of 2,5 percent of all international bednights in Europe. By the end of the decade, s market share had decreased to 2,1 percent. has in particular lost market shares from the Norwegian and Swedish markets. also lost market shares from the important German market, though to a much lesser extent. Finally, has to a minor extent succeeded in winning market shares from other European nations of the Dutch and British source markets.
