2 About the ABA Bank Capture System The ABA Bank Capture system provides a platform for banks to report, share, and analyze bank crime data. This subscribers-only database allows banks of all sizes to share information in a secure and confidential manner to proactively prepare for and potentially prevent future events. With ABA Bank Capture, bankers can: Be notified of local and national incidents in a timely manner, allowing them to take steps to protect their bank and customers. Identify criminal activity trends and patterns. Assess the effectiveness of security controls. Utilize reports to enhance business decisions and properly allocate resources. With ABA Bank Capture, bankers will be able to track criminal activity and take steps to reduce their risks for robberies, burglaries, and ATM crime. Developed in partnership with the FBI, ABA Bank Capture is a collaborative initiative led by the American Bankers Association, an advisory board of its member bankers, and law enforcement. The technology platform behind the ABA Bank Capture system is provided and supported by the Ministry of Ideas. CAP Index provides data analytics and scheduled industry reports to ABA Bank Capture subscribers. 2

3 About the ABA Bank Capture Analysis QUICK FACT The results are based on analyses of 6,520 bank robberies reported by 20 financial institutions (45,022 branches). CAP Index conducts quarterly analyses of the data available in the ABA Bank Capture system and shares the results with the members. It is imperative that robbery trends observed in previous assessments are studied in tandem with the results of the current analysis. The focus of this report is a high-level overview of bank robbery trends across the US in -. Extensive quality control of the data was conducted. The set of branches included in the current analysis differs from that used in the former studies. The branch list will be updated periodically to account for any site openings/closings and to ensure that banks included in the analysis supplied complete information for the study period. 5 Bank Robbery by Year & Quarter Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 n n n Bank Robbery by Year & Month Key Observations Bank robbery counts had been trending downward for many years in previous reports. Now, please note a consistent upward trend that began in Q3 when compared to the same quarter of the preceding year. Please note a 7.8% increase in bank robberies from to. The robbery count is higher for each quarter of the year. In fact, the count (2,232) reaches a level that is higher than that of (2,217). QUICK FACT The bank robbery distribution varies across day of week and time of day. Over the course of the last three years, in terms of day of week, the highest percentage of bank robberies occurred on Friday (20.2%). Over the course of the last three years, in terms of time of day, the highest percentage of bank robberies occurred between 9am and 11am (24.2%). Temporal analyses are subject to limitations due to the lack of branch open/close dates or hours of operation. 12 METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREA QUICK FACT A Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is a geographic entity defined by the Office of Management and Budget for use by Federal statistical agencies in collecting, tabulating, and publishing Federal statistics. It contains a core urban area of 50,000 or more population. Each MSA consists of one or more counties and includes the counties containing the core urban area, as well as any adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration (as measured by commuting to work) with the urban core.
