1 CITYOFWOODINVILLE, WA REPORT TO THE CITY COUNCIL rd Avenue NE, Woodinville, WA To: From: t Honorable City Council Richard A. Leahy, City Manager By: Alexandra Sheeks, Assistant to t e City Manager./(> Subject: Approval of Gateway and Wayfinding Sign Programs Date: 01/14/2014 FINANCIAL ACTION SUMMARY Expenditure Required Amount Budgeted/Approved Additional Amount Required Gateway Signs $208,000 Gateway Signs $208,000 Gateway Signs $0 Wavfinding Siqns $78,000 Wavfindinq Siqns $50,000 Wavfindinq Siqns ($28,000\ Total $286,000 Total $258,000 Total ($28,000) ISSUE: Shall the City Council approve the Gateway and Wayfinding Sign Programs? RECOMMENDATION: To approve these programs substantially as presented. BACKGROUND/ANALYSIS: In late 2012, after a public involvement process, the Council discussed final options for a proposed Gateway and Wayfinding Sign Plan. The Plan is intended to provide gateway signs at community entrance points; update the City's existing Wayfinding signs; and install new signs to designate specific "districts" of the City, such as the Tourist and Warehouse District. The Council directed the program be delayed based upon requests of some community business representatives. The City Council Economic Development Committee reviewed the requests of the business community, and on November 19, 2013 recommended to the full City Council that the programs proceed as currently designed. Prior to proceeding with the programs, staff requests the City Council approve the conceptual sign designs. On Tuesday evening, we intend to review the final design concepts with the City Council prior to implementing the programs. The Budget includes $258,000 for these programs. It is now anticipated these programs will cost approximately $286,000, which is $28,000 more than previously approved levels. For the Wayfinding Sign Program, the City Council previously approved funding with Hotel/Motel Tax revenues. Recent changes in State Law require the Lodging Tax Advisory Board to recommend that funding to the City Council. That Board is expected to submit its recommendation to the Chy Council before the end of February ALTERNATIVES: 1. Approve the programs, as presented 2. Deny the programs 3. Direct staff to develop additional alternatives RECOMMENDED MOTION: I MOVE TO APPROVE THE GATEWAY AND WAYFINDING SIGN PROGRAMS, SUBSTANTIALLY AS PRESENTED; AND AUTHROIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO PROCEED WITH THE PROGRAMS AS SOON AS REASONABLY POSSIBLE.
