History Day 7 Area Flyers 8 Intergroup Contacts 9 Monthly Events 9 H&I Conference Flyer and VSC Contact Info Back Page Self-Supporting through our own contributions? Whether it s your home group, a meeting you regularly or just occasionally attend, or one you ve never been to; the format for this area is usually that the Secretary starts the meeting, asks for a moment of silence, then leads us in the Serenity Prayer. That s usually followed by asking for newcomers, sometimes asking for visitors from out -of-town, for anyone who has celebrated an A.A. birthday in the past week then we ll now pass the basket for the seventh tradition. We have no dues or fees, but we do have expenses. What are those expenses that are covered by the seventh tradition? For most meetings the expenses include rent for our meeting place, coffee, cups, napkins, stirrers, creamer, sweetener, etc. Sometimes, depending on the group, expenses may include literature for newcomers, birthday chips, sweets for the meeting (i.e., donuts, bagels, cookies), etc. It is suggested that after paying the groups/meetings expenses, distribution of excess funds (over a prudent reserve) be made as follows: 40% or 50% to the Valley Service Center ( 30% to the General Service Office (GSO) in New York ( 5% or 10% to District 70, Alameda South ( districts/alameda-south) 5% or 10% to California Northern Coastal Area (CNCA) ( Each month the Valley View publishes contributions from meetings/ groups (see page 4). Of the groups/meetings in this area 25 of 35 have made contributions to the Valley Service Center in this past calendar year. Additionally, GSO recently published a feasibility study (link to a copy here that shows that in the year ending 2014, only 41.6% of the groups listed with GSO contributed anything to GSO (that means 58.4% of groups made NO contributions). Are the groups/meetings that you attend self supporting? The A.A. groups themselves ought to be fully supported by the voluntary contributions of their own members. We think that each group should soon achieve this ideal; that any public solicitation of funds using the name of Alcoholics Anonymous is highly dangerous, whether by groups, clubs, hospitals, or other outside agencies; that acceptance of large gifts from any source, or of contributions carry any obligation whatever, is unwise. Then, too, we view with much concern those A.A. treasuries which continue, beyond prudent reserves, to accumulate funds for no stated A.A. purpose. Experience has often warned us that nothing can so surely destroy our spiritual heritage as futile disputes over property, money, and authority.
