1 Coast Path Survey Stretch 04 Sandown Zoo to Ventnor Bay Overview map for this stretch Introduction This stretch of coastline starting at the northern edge of Sandown follows sandy beaches alongside roads and revetments through the urban areas of Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. Between Sandown pier and Shanklin Chine a 30 to 40 m high cliff provides views over a traffic free revetment and the beach. From the southern end of Shanklin through to Bonchurch a stretch of wooded rotating landslip above 50 to 70 m cliffs dominates the coastline. Then the east side of Ventnor town features a stretch of revetment below 25 m high chalk cliffs.

At (2) the esplanade SS76 borders the High Street to reach Sandown Pier at (3). Sandown Pier North Sandown Promenade

3 to 6 The current coastal path climbs steps at (4) to follow the cliff path SS59 and road to (5) where due to cliff erosion it follows a short diversion to the A3055 and back. It is recommended that the new path follows a traffic free revetment from the pier to point (6) where another path SS65 leads up to the cliff top. Current A3055 Diversion. 4 06 Welcome Beach to Luccombe Village (Stretch 04) Key map references- 7 SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ Ref Location Land type/use and Path information Photos and detail maps to 9 Having walked at shore level along the revetment it is now recommended that at (6) the path SS65 rejoins the existing Coast path Route SS59 to take advantage of clear coastal views. This will provide a more varied walk than staying on the revetment all the way to Shanklin. At (7) continue along the higher path SS72 thus avoiding a busy Esplanade road (8) serving shore side commercial premises. Path to cliff top

6 Walk along the top of the shore and climb Appley steps at (11). Path to Appley Steps With view of Knock Cliffs Properties and their gardens backing onto the cliff top (11) mean the only viable route is the existing Coastal path SS74 past Rylstone gardens and up Luccombe Rd to way point (13). Satellite view Appley steps to Luccombe Road to 14 At way point (12) the existing coast path route SS2 follows a field edge path for a short distance running west of and parallel to Luccombe Road. This coincides with the NT Haddons Pitts open access land on the east seaward side of the Road. We recommend that a new stretch of path runs around Haddons Pitts between points (13) and (14) providing views from Knock Cliff. Haddons Pitts

7 14 15 Luccombe Village to Ventnor Grand Stand (Stretch 04) Key map references- 15 SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ SZ to 17 At the end of Luccombe Road the existing coast path SS2 continues along an un-surfaced path on the east side of Luccombe Village to cross SS3/4 Luccombe Chine path (15) at the only feasible point given the location of properties and the chine landscape. 8 The existing coast path SS2 then follows a paved track to way point (17). A property and its garden (16) prevent any route closer to the shoreline. Paved section of coast path to 20 From (17) to (18) the current coastal path V65a undulates across a wooded landslip area following the best viable route. Significant further landslip is possible along this part of the path. 9 As the Coast Path passes through the Landslip, four paths SS1, V65, V65c and V65d link it to the A3055 road. Both SS1 and V65 start from a car park on this main road. V67 to Bonchurch From the medieval church at (18) the existing paved path V185 drops down to start of the Ventnor revetment at (20). Bonchurch A potential alternative route at (19) leads to Horseshoe Bay where a shingle bank joins the revetment. Horseshoe Bay to 22 From Horseshoe Bay (20) the revetment V110-5 runs below cliffs past Wheelers Bay (21) to the Bandstand on Ventnor seafront (22). Bonchurch to Ventnor Revetment Bandstand Ventnor

10 Summary of Opportunities and Access Issues a) A significant part of the proposed route along coastal stretch follows the existing path and along paved surfaces in urban areas. b) NT open access land above Knock cliff provides the opportunity to provide a new path of the paved road and closer to the shoreline. c) The section of the path through the Landslip near upper Bonchurch needs to be upgraded to meet National Trail standard.
