1 Winter/Spring 2013 THE OVERLOOK Volume 7 Issue1 1# TLO Third Annual Community Yard Sale Homeowners Association Board Meetings All meetings will now be held at the Greenwood Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, 809 Greenwood Rd, Winchester, VA The meetings for the year are as follows: April 19th & 20th, 8am-1pm Excited to free up some closet or basement space? It's that time again to start your spring cleaning and finding items you no longer need! Our community is going to sponsor a yard sale for Friday April 19th and Saturday April 20th. Rain or Shine!! Wednesday, May 22nd August 7th November 13th 6:30pm Your attendance is greatly appreciated! Committee Meeting March 26 Greenwood Vol. Fire & Rescue 6:30pm Editor: Tiffeny Garcia Articles Submitted by Committee Members Participation is easy. Just get your items ready and priced! The HOA will sponsor an ad in the Winchester Star to run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - it will be listed as a Multi-Family, Twin Lakes Overlook Community Yard Sale. This will help entice many people to check out the numerous items we are sure to have available. We will list baby items, furniture, toys, clothing, tools within the ad. Participation is strictly voluntary. You can participate either day or both days, the choice is yours. At this time we will use our community sandwich board signs to advertise at the two entrances that there is a yard sale in the community that week-end. If you live off Canyon Road and would like to place signs up at your court s intersection with Canyon Road to help encourage traffic into your cul-de-sac area, please feel free to do so. Last year we had some very good traffic and several neighbors reported a decent showing. Have fun getting your items ready for the sale and best of luck to everyone clearing out unused items. And please remember, the sale will occur rain or shine. No reschedule date is planned.

4 TWIN LAKES OVERLOOK DIRECTORY UPDATE The Communications/Activities Committee stated in the last Newsletter that we would make any corrections and additions to the directory and distribute them after the Christmas holidays. We decided that we would wait until after the Annual Meeting of each year (which is held in February). Therefore, if you have any corrections or if you wish to be added, there is still time. Summer Sizzler at Jay Dee s Last summer s Twin Lakes activity was a great success with about 50 residents attending that we will be having a summer kick off at Jay Dee's in June! Again, the water park will be closed except for us, which means we could go on the slides with no long lines and be in the big pool and splash pool with no crowds. We had some good feedback on the activity in the fall, even from residents who don t have small children. This year we will be including food with the event! Stay tuned for more information! Fall Fling Help! Our committee members are currently looking for help from our residents at Twin Lakes! The Fall Fling is always a success in our community, but was unfortunately cancelled last year due to many reasons. There are fewer members on the committee board and it is very hard for a few to pull together such a big event. We would like a group of 5-6 residents to be the "Fall Fling Committee" under the guidance of those who are still on the TLO Committee board. Please come to a committee meeting (March 26th) or contact one of the members (info at the end of the newsletter). We hope to hear from you! 4

PATRICK'S DAY DINNER Chocolate Martini - 2 oz. vodka - powdered cocoa for trimming - 1 1/2 oz white creme de cacao - chocolate kiss - Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. - Shake vigorously. - Strain into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with cocoa. - Garnish with chocolate kiss. SIGN UP TO BE INFORMED Twin Lakes Overlook has an informational list that is used to inform residents about upcoming events, reminders of meetings, neighborhood vandalism and other types of information that we feel is needed which does not fit in the newsletter time line (i.e. early warning about sidewalks and road paving). This list is separate from the TLO Directory. These notices go out with the addresses blind copied so they are not out there for everyone to see. There are also only three of us who have access to the master list and who are authorized to send an which prevents you from being bombarded with lots of unwanted s. If you would like to be included on this list, please send an to Bonnie Whiting at bcw2048@msn.com. 5 Irish Beef Stew with Guinness Beer - 2 t olive oil - 1 onion, chopped - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 1 t salt - 1/2 t black pepper - 2 lb beef, cubed - 3 cups Guinness beer - 2 potatoes peeled and sliced - 2 potatoes peeled and quartered -2 carrots peeled and chopped - salt and ground black pepper to taste - Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat - Stir in the onions, garlic, salt and pepper - Cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent - about 5 minutes - Stir in the beef Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the beef, beer, carrots, sliced potatoes, and quartered potatoes. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the beef is tender, about 2 hours. 6 Our New Community Website Coventry Group is continuing in working to obtain all of the past documentation that was on CMC s documentation section plus adding much more! Even though our page is currently under construction, we can see some documents and pay our dues online! We are working on adding a community calendar as well as many useful links that TLO homeowners can find really handy! The Twin Lakes Overlook new web page address is: If have any ideas or sections that you might want to see on our web page, please contact a communications member with them! We Need YOUR Help! The current members from the TLO Committee are asking for your help. We would like to plan events for 2013 and would like have some help with improving Twin Lakes overall. We understand that everyone has very busy lives, but to continue with events and improvements here at TLO we cannot do it alone. Please join us for our next committee meeting March 26th. We would love to have new members and ideas! A few reasons to volunteer... Protect your self-interests. Protect your property values and maintain the quality of life in your community. Correct a problem. Be sociable. Meet your neighbors, make friends, and exchange opinions. Give back. Repay a little of what s been done for you. Advance your career. Build your personal resume by including your community volunteer service. Have some fun. Association work isn t drudgery. It s fun accomplishing good things with your neighbors. Get educated. Learn how things are done. Express yourself. Help with creative projects like community beautification. Earn recognition. If you would like a little attention or validation, your contributions will be recognized and celebrated. Try some altruism. Improve society by helping others. 6

7 Ron s Mildew Removal Recipe Homeowner Tip Having mold and mildew issues on your outside vinyl siding, deck railings or concrete stairways? Ron Whiting searched for an easy fix and has found success. Mix 5 parts water to 1 part bleach. Spray on the affected areas (best to use a garden sprayer) and let it work for a few minutes. Rinse with clear water. Depending on the severity of the mold and mildew, this may need to be done twice. Your Committee Members We are currently in the process of combining all committees into one.
