1 Palm Beach Community College Automotive, Collision & Diesel Business Partnership Council MEETING MINUTES Thursday, September 29, :30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Room ETC101 (Automotive Lab) ITEM 1. Autotronics Lab Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Dr. Vallejo-Provost, Dean Jackie Rogers, and Pete Losito welcomed the BPC members and offered remarks on the Automotive Program s success. Jay Safford gave a presentation on the new Autotronics lab. Data/data source: (Jay Safford & Luis F. Tamayo) ITEM 2. Introductions All attendees introduced themselves, where they worked and the position they held. Data/data source: (All Attendees) ITEM 3. 2 ITEM 4. Old Business Car Show Steve Horlick showed pictures of the car show. He spoke of the success of this event and gave information on how many cars were at the 1 st show (38 cars) and at the 2 nd (114 cars). Also, the show succeeded in the goal of adding new students to our fall programs. Data/data source: (Steve Horlick) ITEM 5. The Car Show committee will meet to determine the date of the next car show. Old Business Paint Booth Update Tom, acting as the Project Manager, gave an update on the process. He stated that PBCC has approved the scope of work and budgeted appropriately. The scope of work will include, but not limited, to three (3) observations windows, an air breathing system, painting of the booth, re-gasketed, two (2) infra-red drying units and a paint mixing station. Tom said the work will be completed by the end of Data/data source: (Tom Lewis) ITEM 6. Tom will provide a status report during the next Collision BPC meeting scheduled for November 22, Old Business Student recruitment/registration update Luis shared the Diesel, Collision and Automotive Service registration numbers. We have seen a healthy increase in the new fall classes. A discussion was held on the TABE test and what level of student was being allowed into the program. Luis stated that while we couldn t restrict anyone, we encouraged individuals to immediately attend a remediation skills workshop if they were below the 5 th grade. Old Business Automotive Service- NATEF Advisory Committee Luis Tamayo stated that, by state law, PBCC s Automotive Service Technology Program needs to become accredited by NATEF. Luis asked for volunteers to be part of the Automotive Service-NATEF BPC that will assist him in the accreditation process. Don Barbier, Bill Empke, Marlin Hanford, Jim Harper, Bill Tyson, Phillip White and Tony Muro volunteered to participate in this committee. 3 ITEM 8. New Business Joint Advisory meetings with Seminole Ridge Community High School Manuel Moya, Automotive Instructor at the High School spoke about the need for BPC members to visit his students and speak about the automotive industry. He also spoke about NATEF and stated that a consulting team of three individuals had been retained to help in this endeavor. Data/data source: (Manual Moya) BPC members to call Mr. Moya on their availability.. ITEM 9. New Business - New Diesel Technology Program Charles stated that Diesel technicians are in short supply. He also stated the technology has dramatically increased over the last 10 years with multiple computers operating within the vehicle system. Charles stated that he really needs trucks to work on. Luis Tamayo stated that Mr. Hank Stevens from Freightliner is helping us get a discount on a class 8 truck. Al Fyfe, Hank Stevens and members from Waste Management volunteered to participate in the Diesel Technology BPC. Data/data source: (Charles Johnson) ITEM 10. A Diesel Technology BPC meeting needs to be scheduled. New Business Status of Vehicle & Equipment Donations Luis gave an overview of the various equipment/vehicles that have been donated. Steve Horlick, Auto Collision instructor, stated the need for materials e.g., doors, fenders etc. from Keystone. Bob Zelano may be able to help in this regard. Manual Moya, Seminole Ridge, also stated his program needed vehicles and that they had to be less than six (6) years old. 4 ITEM 11. New Business Applied Academics Curriculum Alan Bohen gave an overview of this new course. It is WEB based and is completely paperless. Alan stated that the three (3) main areas of concentration were Applied Communications, Applied Science and Applied Math. Alan stated that his program needs samples of warranty forms and service manuals on CD. Data/data source: (Alan Bohen) ITEM 12. Marlin Hanford may be able to provide some warranty forms. New Business Student Recognition Albert Kemperle of Fl will donated a tool box for one of the four (4) graduating Automotive Collision students. The student will be selected by a drawing. Data/data source: (Pete Losito) Drawing to be held on October 7, ITEM 13. New Business Student Placement The BPC wanted to know how PBCC placed students. Luis Tamayo stated that by working with the BPC members, we had successfully placed most of our students. A conversation was held regarding the need for caution before placing current students. The concern is losing the students to the employer before they graduate. Data/data source: (All) Doreen Jadwick, PBCC Career Center, stated that employers contact her about possible placement, and she contacts the Program Managers to inform them of specific requests. ITEM 15. Doreen s is jadwickd@pbcc.edu New Business Continuing Workforce Education Rich Durland, BASF, stated that a pilot program with PBCC will be offered. This will be a 4-6 week refresher program on the BASF paint systems. Sandi Barrett stated that PBCC will also offer an ASE refresher course in February. Steve Horlick mentioned that we are currently offering a basic Automotive Collision course on Wednesday evening. This program will run for 6-8 weeks at the cost of $55. 5 ITEM 16. Next Meeting Date Marlin Hanford said that BPC meetings should be held more often and preferably not at the end of the month. There will be individual meetings for Automotive Collision, Automotive Service-NATEF and Diesel Technology.
