1 Mexico Canada trade relations Through NAFTA, Mexico and Canada have also strengthened their trade ties; as a result trade flows between Mexico and Canada have shown an outstanding performance, depicted by its annual average growth rate indicator which was established at 13.4 percent for the first nine years of the agreement. This has led to establish Mexico as Canada s main trading partner in Latin America and its fourth largest partner worldwide following the United States, Japan and the China. During 2002, Mexico and Canada conducted $12,570.7 million in bilateral trade, this in turn is more than three times higher than the value of trade established in the year prior to NAFTA (a growth rate of percent between 2002 and 1993); moreover it also represents an increase of 4.4 percent in comparison with the bilateral trade of Mexico-Canada trade: Monthly trends January December 2002 (Value in million US dollars) Mexican imports from Canada Canadian imports from Mexico Mexico's trade surplus with Canada Jan-93 Jan-94 Jan-95 Jan-96 Jan-97 Jan-98 Jan-99 Jan-00 Jan-01 Jan-02 Source: The Ministry of the Economy with data from BANXICO and STATISTICS CANADA Mexico has become one of the most important destinations for Canadian products; in fact, it is ranked as Canada s third largest export market only behind the United States and Japan. In only ninth years of NAFTA s implementation Mexican exports to Canada have almost tripled (an increase of about percent), reaching $8,090 million in 2002; furthermore, these exports also represented an increase of 3.6 percent from the level of 2001, and accounted for 3.7 percent of Canada s total import market. In addition, the export patterns illustrate how both countries are building a strong and balanced trade relationship. In 2002, there was a large range of goods in which Canada is the first supplier to Mexico from agricultural to metal and mineral products, to name a few.
