5 TELEPHONE CARDS Since 1974 Cable and Wireless have been operating the external Falkland Islands telephone service and in 1990 they took over the internal service as well. In 1983 Cable and Wireless installed the first payphones for telephone cards and they could be used for external calls only. Since 1990 these payphones can also be used for internal calls. Magnetic strip cards were used in , Chip cards in , PIN cards from 2002 onwards.
