1 DATE: October 2015 VENUE: Klapson Hotel, Singapore COURSE NAME: ABOUT THIS COURSE KEY ELEMENTS OF SHIPPING - 11th RUN Key Elements of Shipping is a 3-day maritime executive short course. Participants will gain a comprehensive overview of the business of shipping, together with a practical understanding of the critical interaction between commercial, legal, financial and technical drivers of the shipping industry. The course is produced and delivered by the internationally renowned BI Norwegian Business School, in collaboration with SeaProf Executive Training. 18 CPD hours are available in recognition of attendance for individuals seeking continuing membership of their respective industry regulatory organisation. SUPPORTING ORGANISATIONS: TARGET AUDIENCE Operations, HR and financial managers seeking a broader based understanding of the business of shipping. Shipping services professionals; including manufacturers, lawyers, supply chain executives, ship brokers and builders. Financial analysts and operatives from the banking, leasing and ship investment sectors. Marine insurance brokers, underwriters, adjustors and P&I correspondents.. New entrants to the shipping industry, as well as mid level staff who aspire to moving up to a more challenging management role. COURSE CONTENT: The Global Shipping Industry and its critical importance to world trade + the industry players, the primary markets and ship types Regulation of shipping, including ship registration, classification, inspection and Port State Control. Introduction to shipping economics, market cycles, over capacity and 'where are we now'? Shipbrokers' market review and projections. Ship finance, current market options and the future from a banks perspective Role of ports: their operation, infrastructure, obligations and future challenges. Chartering: understanding how ships earn money, plus strategy and optimisation techniques. 'Greening' - impact on ships, ports and profitability, plus 'what's the future?' Ship management: a 3rd party manager's perspective of a growth industry. Marine insurance - history, markets, risk, management, types of cover and the role of the broker. LEARNING METHODOLOGY Learning will be provided through lectures and interactive case study workshops delivered by leading university academics as well as top industry professionals - a total of 11 maritime experts in all. OUTCOMES: Participants will acquire new shipping industry knowledge and strategic thinking skills for immediate application in their workplace. The goal is to enhance the industry success of the participant's employer, together with the participant's own personal advancement. CERTIFICATION Learning assessment will be accomplished by way of workshop responses and presentations. Successful participants will be awarded with a prestigious BI Norwegian Business School "Certificate of Achievement". Each group (represented not less than two participants) will present their summary/key Take Aways. Each group will also present ideas on implementing their Take Aways to help improve the efficiency of their employer s martime business. Interactive discussion will be encouraged throughout to generate input (including questions & challenges!) from all class participants. The workshop facilitators will conduct learning assessment, based on group presentations. About the course The KES course has been run twice each year since It is taught by senior academics and leading marine industry professionals so as to provide a blend of both theory and topical market practice. Target Group The course is designed primarily for people who have recently started to work in the industry, or who may have been in the industry for several years and now aspire to move up to a more challenging management role. Outcomes The participants will understand the roles of the many shipping industry players, the regulatory complexities of ship owning and management, the intricacies of ship acquisition and finance, shipping economics and market cycles, chartering fundamentals and revenue projection, risk management and marine insurance and the challenges and opportunities of green shipping. Learning assessment will be by way of case studies and Q & A sessions and a BI Norwegian Business School Certificate of Achievement will be awarded. The course will enhance the knowledge, confidence and credentials of the participants to enable them to advance their careers in one of the world s most challenging industries.
