1 Dear High School Families, January 19, 2017 You are receiving this letter because your student has expressed interest in Campbell Hall s service learning backpack trip to Yosemite National Park, which is a two-part experience. We will begin with an overnight training camp out on February 10-12, 2017, at Malibu Creek State Park and take our trip to Yosemite National Park, April 2-8, Campbell Hall s High School Director of Community Service and Bishop s Chair for Spiritual Ecology, Jonny Rogers, will lead both trips, which will be chaperoned by faculty, all of whom are certified in CPR and first aid. The February training camp out, where we will be in tents at Malibu Creek State Park, gives us all an opportunity to hone our gear, fitness, and wilderness skills. We will provide bus transportation from Campbell Hall departing on Friday, February 10, at 4:00 p.m. and returning February 12 at 7:00 p.m. Because this training serves as preparation for our backcountry trip, we will carry all gear, and students will need to log at least 30 miles in their hiking boots before beginning the Yosemite trip. At Yosemite, we plan to camp at Upper Pines and engage in survival training such as fire making, shelter building, plant and animal identification; in addition we will take long day hikes and study basic geology, earth science, astronomy, and Native American history. We will depart from Campbell Hall via bus Sunday, April 2, at 8:00 a.m. and return Saturday, April 8, at 8:00 p.m. We d like to underscore that this will be an advanced service learning trip, which requires planning, physical fitness, and teamwork. We encourage students to practice hiking with a full pack and boots so they know they are ready for the excitement and the challenge of hiking significant elevation (3,000-6,000 feet). Though we will not have access to cell phones in Yosemite, we will carry an emergency satellite phone. We will hold a parent meeting Tuesday, January 31, at 6:30 p.m. in room 7208 where we will provide an overview of the trip and answer any questions you might have. In the meantime, please feel free to contact Mr. Rodgers at rodgerj@campbellhall.org. Enclosed, please find the following materials, some of which are due to the High School office by February 3, 2017(*): 1. *CH Authorization and Release Form 2. *Prescription Medication Form (if applicable) 3. *CH Policies and Procedures Agreement 4. Equipment Packing List All necessary paper forms and non-refundable payment are due to the High School office by February 3, If the trip is canceled due to inclement weather, all families will be reimbursed in full. The trip cost is $850 per student, and checks should be written to Campbell Hall. To apply for partial scholarships, students may send Mr. Rodgers (rodgerj@campbellhall.org) a 250-word paragraph describing their interest in service learning and what they hope to contribute to the trip. The firm deadline for scholarship applications is February 3, We look forward to this adventure! Sincerely, Jonny Rodgers Carolyn LaGaly High School Director of Community Service High School Principal & Bishop s Chair for Spiritual Ecology

By law, expired medication cannot be administered and will not be accepted by the Health Office. In addition, each medication requires a separate consent form to be filled out by parents or guardians. This form is available for download in the medical registration database following the submission of your student s online forms. 5 YOSEMITE PACKING LIST This is the list of gear that you will need to bring with you on both backpacking trips. We want you to have practice of carrying all the weight including the weight of your snow gear. If you are buying new gear and would like advice, please contact Mr. Rodgers and he ll be able to provide info on which items are best suited for what we re doing. Items Back Pack (with water proof pack cover for rain/snow) Hard Plastic or Metal Water Bottle (32 oz.) Hydration Bladder (2 or 3 liter) Tent Sleeping Bag Sleeping Pad Pillow Yak Tracks or Crampons Dishes, Bowls, and Utensils Headlamp Clothing: Warm Weather Wicking T-Shirt (synthetic or wool) Wicking Underwear (synthetic or wool) Quick-drying pants or shorts Light long-sleeve shirt (for sun, bugs) Sun-Shielding Hat Bandana or Buff Clothing: Cold Weather Wicking-Long Sleeve Shirt Wicking Long Underwear (shirt and Description Not just a school day pack, but a larger hiking pack, preferably hydration compatible (meaning you can put a hydration bladder in it). The pack cover should cover the entire pack. So important to stay hydrated. Bring 2 if you can. Having the capacity to sip while you hike is super important. If you just have a water bottle, dehydration is much more likely. You will be grateful to have a hydration bladder. The school will provide tents to those who do not have their own. Functioning rainfly is necessary. Rated for 20 degrees or lower. This is important. If you aren t warm enough at night, you will be miserable! Very important. Inflatable ones work best. The lighter weight, and the thicker, the better. It will keep you insulated from the cold ground and also keep you comfortable at night. Inflatable backpacking pillow is best, but an airplane pillow will do. Otherwise just bring a pillow case to fill with extra clothing at night. For hiking on icy/snowy trails. It keeps you from slipping, so they are necessary. The more lightweight the better. One bowl, one cup/mug, one set of silverware or chopsticks should do (wood or aluminum or plastic nothing heavy) Please get headlamp rather than a flashlight. It s so important to have both hands free at night. Bring no more than 2 or 3 of each item. Packing light is important. Bring 1 of each item. Long underwear is very important, as are all these items. If your winter parka is waterproof and you d rather bring just that,
6 pants) Hat/Beanie Balaclava or Buff Snow Gloves or mittens Rainwear (jacket, pants) Base layer long sleeve shirt Fleece jacket Winter Parka/Puffy Jacket it can stand in for a rain jacket, but please make sure you have water proof layers for both top and bottom. Water proof Hiking Boots Socks (x3 pairs) (synthetic, wool) Trekking Poles (optional) Sunscreen SPF Lip Balm Sunglasses Sandals (Chacos, Tevas, etc.) While these are optional, they will improve your hiking experience immensely, and keep you safer on trail. Bring plenty for both face and body Don t let your lips get burnt! It s going to be bright if the sun is out. For any river crossing and for walking around in camp in case your feet need a break from your footprisons. These must have a heel strap (no flip flops). Gaiters (optional) Camera (optional) Binoculars (optional) Outdoor Journal and Pencil Insect Repellant Biodegradable Soap Small Quick-dry Towel (micro-fiber is best)
7 Medications at School Consent Forms Medication to be administered during a school event requires a Consent to Administer Medication form that is signed and dated by a parent or guardian. Prescription medication also requires a physician signature and stamp. Each medication requires its own consent form. The consent form is valid for the school year. If a consent form for a medication has been previously submitted to Magnus Health or to the Campbell Hall Health Office, an additional copy is not required. Medication forms are available for download on the Health Office webpage at or in the Health Office. Prescription Medications Prescription medication must be in the original container and delivered to the Health Office by a parent. Medication is not permitted to be with the student (with the exception of emergency medication; please see below). Please do not put medication in the student s bag. The original container must have the pharmacy label containing: the student s name, doctor s name, the name of the medication, and details regarding the method, dosage, and time schedule by which the medication is to be administered. A medication consent form signed by a parent and the physician is also required for each prescription medication (see above consent form section). Medication that is not in the original container or is expired is not accepted. If the medication is required for a school field trip or event, please send only the doses of medication to be administered during the school event and keep additional doses at home. Non-Prescription Medications (Over the Counter) Non-prescription medication, such as Dramamine, must be in its original container with the student s name on it. A medication consent form that is signed by the parent is also required for each medication (see above consent form section). Please do not leave medication with the student. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, Benadryl, Claritin, cough drops, throat lozenges, decongestant, and cough medications are sent on field trips by the Health Office and do not require a separate consent form. *Parent consent for these medications has been previously obtained in Magnus Health during health registration. Emergency Medications Students who require emergency medications, such as EpiPens, inhalers, Glucagon, Diastat, etc., must have a supply stored in the Health Office at all times. The Health Office will send the emergency medication on field trips and retreats. Students are advised to self-carry or provide an additional supply for coaches/chaperones during any other extracurricular activities such as sports. If the student carries the emergency medication with him/her, the Health Office must be advised in writing. Only prescribed emergency medication is permitted to be with the students. Please deliver medications and consent forms to the Health Office at least one week prior to field trips or retreats. Questions?
