1 2016 Macon County SOTCH Scorecard Th e follow in g SOTCH Scorecard w as created an d su bmitted March 6, 2017 in order to meet th e requ iremen ts for th e Macon Cou n ty an n u al State of th e Cou n ty's Health (SOTCH) Report. Th e 2015 Commu n ity Health Assessmen t priority areas are: Priority 1- Heart Disease- Redu ce th e in ciden ce of preven table ch ron ic diseases related specifically to cardiovascu lar disease/h eart disease to th ose th at reside in th e commu n ity. Priority 2- Domestic Violen ce- Promote th e reportin g an d appropriate resou rce referrals for domestic violen ce in ciden ts an d redu ce th e in ciden ce of domestic violen ce in th e commu n ity. Priority 3- Econ omic Developmen t- Promote econ omic developmen t opportu n ities th at resu lt in h ealth ier lifestyle ch oices for in dividu als in th e commu n ity. Th e follow in g resou rces w ere u sed/review ed in order to complete th e SOTCH: 2017 Cou n ty Health Data B ook North Carolin a State Cen ter for Health Statistics Health Priority 1 - Heart Disease R CHIP Maconians live long, active, and happy lives. Why It Matters? Heart disease presen ted as th e leadin g cau se of overall death in Macon Cou n ty for th e time period an d w as th u s selected as a priority area. Macon Cou n ty's overall n u mber of death s associated w ith diseases of th e h eart w ere 483 an d a mortality rate of Most cardiovascu lar disease affects older adu lts. It is estimated th at 90% of cardiovascu lar disease is preven table. Modifiable risk factors for h eart disease in clu de h igh blood pressu re, h igh ch olesterol, cigarette smokin g, diabetes, an u n h ealth y diet, ph ysical in activity, an d obesity. Th e Health y NC 2020 Focu s Area to w h ich h eart disease most closely align s w ith is ph ysical activity an d n u trition. Progress Made in Last Year Th e follow in g progress w as made in 2016 on h eart disease in Macon Cou n ty. Th e Resu lts B ased Accou n tability meth od w as u sed to iden tify action items an d to improve th e effectiven ess of th e Task Force. An on lin e poll regardin g th e preferen ce of Heart Disease Task Force meetin g time(s) w as completed to better accommodate Task Force member's sch edu les an d en su re participation. A Diabetes Preven tion Program w as started in September 2016; th is class is n ow in th e secon d ph ase of th e program. Th is is a n ew program in ou r commu n ity an d aims to make a differen ce at th e organ ization al/policy level. Implemen tation w ill take place in th e commu n ity recreation cen ter. Age is a distin gu ish able risk factor in developin g cardiovascu lar or h eart disease. Th e median age in Macon Cou n ty is several years "older" th an th e region al mean an d th e state average median. Th is, an d th e projected grow th over th e n ext tw o decades of th e popu lation 65+, fit w ith th e region al ch aracteristic of a sign ifican tly large popu lation of sen ior citizen s an d th e issu es th at accompan y th at ch aracteristic. Th e Task Force is in th e ph ase of processin g th e essen tial steps to en su re a su ccessfu l creation of free commu n ity classes th rou gh th e recreation cen ter. Health Priority 2 - Domestic Violence R CHIP In Macon County we want a community that is safe and violence- free. Why It Matters? Domestic violen ce report rates h ave escalated sign ifican tly in recen t years w h ich prompted th e Mou n tain W ise of Macon Cou n ty grou p to select it as a priority area of in terest. Domestic violen ce is a pattern of beh avior w h ich in volves violen ce or oth er abu se by on e person again st an oth er in a domestic settin g. Domestic violen ce in clu des a ran ge of acts in clu din g, bu t n ot limited to, domestic abu se, spou sal abu se, in timate partn er violen ce (IVP), batterin g, an d family violen ce. It mu st be n oted th at sexu al assau lt is in clu ded in discu ssion s abou t domestic violen ce; sexu al assau lt is a form of violen ce an d is often tied to domestic violen ce in stan ces. In Macon Cou n ty FY , 94 person s w ere iden tified as victims of sexu al assau lt. Th e sin gle most frequ en tly specific type of sexu al assau lt du rin g th e period w as ch ild sexu al offen se. Secon d, it h as been proposed th at social ou tcomes can on ly be improved by redu cin g in come poverty. Lastly, social ou tcomes can also be improved w ith essen tial ser vices su ch as edu cation, h ealth care, an d clean drin kin g w ater.employmen t provides in come an d, often, ben efits th at can su pport h ealth y lifestyle ch oices. O n average 46.3% of Macon Cou n ty residen ts w ere classified as low - in come du rin g Correspon din gly poverty rates in Macon Cou n ty an d comparable ju risdiction s in creased in a period th at in clu ded several years of fallin g u n employmen t. Th e percen t of u n in su red in 2013 w as 20% h igh er th an in Th e econ omic availability of employmen t w ith ben efits su ch as in su ran ce cou ld be con sidered part of th e reason w h y rates of u n in su red con tin u e to rise. Th e Health y NC 2020 O bjective th at most closely align s w ith econ omic developmen t as it relates to h ealth is Social Determin an ts of Health an d Ph ysical Activity & Nu trition.
