1 Brother Knights, The Knightly Knews The monthly newsletter of the Knights of Columbus Council #10795 Volume 20, Number 3 St. Vincent de Paul Church, Omaha, Nebraska March 2014 Grand Knotes from the Grand Knight In less than 2 weeks we will have already completed our first Fish Fry of the 2014 Lenten season. The Fish Fry Committee has been working very hard over the past several weeks in preparation for this event and I want to thank the Fish Fry Committee for all of their hard work. The Fish Fry is the largest fundraising event for our council and one of the largest events for our Parish Community. I would like to thank all of the brother Knights & their families for all of their hard work over the next 6 weeks to provide the best Fish Fry in town week after week and year after year. The Fish Fry requires a lot of volunteers and a lot of very hard work goes into making this a great event each week. I would encourage every Brother Knight to work at least one Fish Fry this Lenten Season. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow Knights and a perfect opportunity to meet other parish families. Contact Mike Hugo for your very own Fish Fry t- shirt. I would like to extend a Thank You to the Brother Knights for all their help and dedication throughout the year. Without your help Brother Gary Hennessey and the other members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society would not have been able to provide Christmas for 11 parish and surrounding area families. Thank you to Brother Scott Kerr, Suzanne Kerr, and the Brother Knights who helped hand out cards for the One Rose One Life. We were able to raise almost $3900 for the One Rose One Life program. Thank you to Brother Mark Havermann and the Brother Knights who lent a helping hand to another successful free throw contest in January. 3 Knightly Knews March 2014 P a g e 3 Knight of the Month Gary Hennessey The Grand Knight has named Gary Hennessey as Knight of the Month for March, Jim is a First Degree Knight who recently joined the Knights of Columbus. Gary is a long serving deacon for St. Vincent de Paul. He coordinates the parish s activities for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and helps with many other activities. Since joining late last year, Gary has jumped right in, helping with pancake breakfasts, the free throw contest, and the One Rose, One Life Campaign. Thank you, Gary, for your service, and congratulations on this deserved recognition of your dedication to our Council, our Church, and our Community. Help to make our fish frys a Success There are several things that are needed for our fish fry to be a success. First we need great volunteers to help out at each stations, second the food and service has to be great and served by happy volunteers. Third and the biggest is that we need customers. Family of the Month Chuck and Mary Manternach The Grand Knight has named Chuck and Mary Manternach Family of the Month for March, Chuck is a Third Degree Knight. He is a team captain for the Rainbow PFH group and works the Pennies From Heaven table every fourth Sunday of the month. Chuck helps with the One Rose, One Life Campaign, the Fish Fry s, the Farmers Market, and is a driver for the Food Bank committee. Mary is involved with the Outreach Committee at SVdP, serving as co-treasurer of the group. She also organizes the School Supply Drive for the SVdP grade school. Chuck and Mary have begun volunteering at Skutt High School now that their oldest son Brett is a freshman there. Their youngest son Blake is a sixth Grader at SVdP. Thank you, Chuck and Mary, for your service, and congratulations on this deserved recognition of your dedication to our Council, our Church, and our Community. The Fish Fry team needs your help with all of the above but especially the third item. We ask that all Knights help to Spread the Word. Tell your friends, co-workers, neighbors, other clubs, etc. about our great fish fry. You can talk to them, them, post our flyer, etc. Feel free to hand out the flyer that has been sent out in or is attached to this newsletter. The more people that attend, the better the revenue which translates into more charitable giving. We are still the new fish fry in town and need to get the word out. We were able to get a mention in this week s bulletin for St. Leos.

4 Knightly Knews March 2014 P a g e 4 Easter Egg Hunt Tom Kielty Calling all Knights! We will be having the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 10:00 in the Gym. We will be doing this in conjunction with the Parent's with Young Children (PYC) group again this year and encourage all Knights to bring their young children, grandchildren, etc. to come and join in the celebration with your brother Knights! Activities will include; coloring Easter pictures, a visit from the Easter Bunny, great conversation and a very enjoyable Easter Egg Hunt! Look forward to seeing you there! It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. 5 Knightly Knews March 2014 P a g e 5 FISH FRY 2014 Ron Frisse Well it is less than a week till our first fish fry of the season. This is one of our largest fundraisers throughout the year. We still have several volunteer slots open, so please sign up and help support the Knights in this great event. Remember wives, kids (6 th grade and up), etc can also volunteer to work. Like last year, we would like to request that you sign up using the SignUp Genius website. To access the signup please follow this link: The more people we get to volunteer, the better we can spread out the work. We d like you to consider working two of the events, three if you can work it into your schedule. You are always welcome to work more if you like. Younger children will not be allowed to assist with beer, cashiers, or the fry tent. This year the dates for the fish frys are: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11 There are not any major changes, we will be offering Baked Potatoes and accepting credit cards this year. We are also planning to add Boulevard Wheat to our beer offerings. Our prices will be the same for both the meal and drinks. Start time is 5:30 PM each Friday. Please arrive at 4:30 if you can to help assist with setup. One new signup area is a cleanup crew, if you are not available early on a Friday night, why not come out and have some fish and beer then help to clean up after the serving line finishes. The serving line deserves a break when finished to have some dinner too. Afterwards all the workers and the cleanup crew will work together to get things cleaned up fast.
