This dcument serves as a guideline fr all registered students pertaining t the fllwing rules: Wrkshp Participatin; Submissin f Summative Pst-Mdular Assignments; Plagiarism; Perid f study; Indemnity; DHET declaratin; and Undertaking The rules f The Institute are in all respects applicable t all students during the curse f their studies. Please nte that general rules may change frm year t year and it is the student s respnsibility t ensure that they are familiar with the applicable rules befre registratin. 2 Wrkshp Participatin Althugh The Institute is a distance learning institutin, the learning prgrammes include wrkshps as part f its student supprt prcess. Participatin in wrkshps: The Prgramme Cnveners will infrm the student f scheduled wrkshps via Althugh wrkshp attendance is ptinal, a student is required t respnd fr catering purpses at least tw weeks prir t the date f the relevant wrkshp Students unable t attend wrkshps are in n way disadvantaged, as all students have access t the Online Learning Platfrm, MOODLE, where the cntent material and assessments are made available In additin t the wrkshps the student is given the fllwing supprt: Additinal material prvided by the Lecturer during a wrkshp will be made available t all relevant students n MOODLE Students can cntact Lecturers via phne r with any cntent queries The Prgramme Cnvener is readily available t assist with all student queries The Da Vinci Student supprt specialist will engage with every student 3 t 4 times a year. Submissin f the Summative Pst-Mdular Assignments Each learning prgramme ffered by The Institute has specific assessment requirements that each student shuld adhere t. Each student shuld submit a Summative Pst-Mdular Assignment as part f the assessment requirements per registered mdule. The prgramme schedule utlines all dates f wrkshps as well as the Summative Pst- Mdular Assignment submissin dates. Summative Pst-Mdular Assignment submissin Dates Each prgramme schedule indicates tw assessment submissin dates fr each mdule The first submissin date is a cmpulsry date Shuld unfreseen circumstances prhibit yu frm submitting n the first submissin date, then the secnd submissin date must be utilized. This implies that students have t submit their summative submissins by the first submissin date A late submissin is therefre any submissin received after the secnd due date as indicated n the prgramme schedule Only tw late submissins are allwed per year f registratin 24/05/2018 (V4) P a g e 2

3 Submissin f the Summative Pst-Mdular Assignments Shuld a student fail t submit by either f the due dates and has utilized the tw late submissin pprtunities as permitted fr an Academic year, and still have utstanding mdules t cmplete, the student will be required t re-register fr the incmplete mdule (s) t be cmpleted fr that Academic year Such re-registratin implies that the student will nt be able t claim any benefits related t late submissins as he/she will still be within the Academic year within which such benefits apply Summative Pst-Mdular Assignments Resubmissin, Re-assessment and Appeals Prcess: a. Resubmissin: Only ne re-submissin per mdule is permitted If a student fails the re-submissin the student will have t re-register fr the mdule and submit an assignment. Mdular fees will apply. b. Re-assessment: A student may apply fr re-assessment f a summative pst-mdular assignment, if the summative pst-mdular assignment was passed, but they wish t imprve the result by rewriting, amending r adding t the cntent One re-assessment pprtunity is allwed per mdule. A re-assessment fee f R is applicable The result btained after the re-assessment prcess, will be regarded as the final and fficial result. c. Appeals prcess: A student may request an appeal against a summative pst-mdular assignment result. In this case the summative pst-mdular assignment will be assessed by a mderatr t submit a third independent mark One appeals pprtunity is allwed per summative pst-mdular assignment and an appeals fee f R will be applicable If the appeal is successful, the fee will be reimbursed t the student. If nt there will nt be any reimbursement. d. The awarding f a qualificatin with distinctin (cum laude): Students (with the exceptin f thse registered fr the Dctral qualificatin) wh achieve 75% fr each academic cmpnent f the qualificatin will be awarded the qualificatin with distinctin (cum laude) Being successfully awarded a dctral qualificatin, is a distinctin in itself and therefre n mark r cum laude will be awarded 24/05/2018 (V4) P a g e 3

4 Submissin f the Summative Pst-Mdular Assignments If students receive credits twards a qualificatin as a result f achievements btained in prgrammes frm ther accredited institutins, the wrd exemptin will appear in the place f a scre n the student s statement f results. Applicable t Pstgraduate Students Only All students are prvisinally allwed entry t a qualificatin until such time as they have passed the Research prpsal, which is a requirement fr full entry and part f the admissin prcess. There are three submissin dates fr this mdule: First submissin - Draft fr which the student will receive feedback (Chapter 1) Secnd submissin Draft fr which the student will receive feedback (Chapter 3) Third and final submissin which needs t be passed at 60%. A prvisinally accepted student wh fails t submit n the third and final submissin date will be de-registered as they d nt meet the admissin criteria fr full entry. If the student misses the first submissin date, draft ne will need t be included with draft tw. If the student des nt meet the secnd submissin date, draft ne and tw will need t be submitted n the third and final due date. In this instance the student will have waived the pprtunity t receive feedback fr submissin ne and tw. If the student fails the final submissin then the student has ne pprtunity t resubmit within 4 weeks f receipt f the results and feedback but n later than within the first academic year (12 mnths frm date f n-barding as scheduled). Passing this research prpsal mdule with an assessment scre f 60% will activate the fllwing: The acceptance status will be autmatically cnverted t full acceptance in the case f prvisinally accepted students the student can prceed with the mdular curse-wrk as applicable and be allwed t attend the relevant supprt wrkshps a supervisr will be appinted and wrk can cntinue n the thesis r dissertatin such as applicatin fr ethical clearance Da Vinci reserves the right t deregister a student wh fails t shw satisfactry academic prgressin in any academic year. In such cases, students will be respnsible t prvide evidence f participatin and academic prgress, n request, t enable review f their registratin. Therefre in line with adult learning principles, the nus fr academic prgress and the evidence theref is n the pstgraduate student. 24/05/2018 (V4) P a g e 4

5 Plagiarism Plagiarism is an extremely serius ffence and all rle-players assciated with The Institute, including facilitatrs, assessrs, mderatrs, and students, shuld be aware f what cnstitutes plagiarism and the pssible cnsequences shuld plagiarism be suspected and prven. Plagiarism means any attempt t benefit neself, r anther, by deceit r fraud. This shall include: Deliberately reprducing the wrk f anther persn r persns withut due acknwledgement A significant amunt (apprximately 10%) f unacknwledged cpying shall be deemed t cnstitute prima facie evidence f deliberate cpying In such cases the burden f establishing therwise shall rest with the student against whm such an allegatin is made. Plagiarism cnstitutes actins, which: Weaken the educatinal prcess, such as shameless cpying f any aspect f the prgramme Dishnest actins, such as quting frm bks, handuts r the wrk f ther students withut explicitly stating that this was dne. These actins are firmly discuraged by The Institute and it is recmmended that careful attentin is paid t the varius legitimate frms f use f the material f thers.
