Disabled by SSA s definitin befre age 22; and, 3. Child f an insured wrker wh is either disabled, retired r deceased. Yur Extended Perid f Eligibility (EPE) starts the mnth after TWP ends 36 cnsecutive mnths Once EPE starts, it cannt be stpped Key cncept: Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) 2010: SGA is $1000 in cuntable earnings ($1640 fr a Blind individual) Slide 15 Extended Perid f Eligibility (EPE) First 36 mnths are Reinstatement Perid If mnthly cuntable earnings are ver $1000 nt entitled t cash benefits If mnthly cuntable earnings are less than $1000 then entitled t cash benefits Benefits autmatically reinstated withut need fr new applicatin r disability determinatin During the EPE, wrk activity ver $1000 may nt cause terminatin f benefits nly suspensin

7 Slide 16 Extended Perid f Eligibility (EPE) SGA is nt just a number, it is a decisin Scial Security will cnsider the value f yur wrk There are wrk incentives that yu can use during the EPE t lwer yur cuntable earnings: Impairment Related Wrk Expenses (IRWE) Subsidy r Special Cnditins Unsuccessful Wrk Attempt Incme averaging Slide 17 Impairment Related Wrk Expenses (IRWE) Item r service enables yu t wrk Need item/service because f disabling impairment Yu paid the cst and are nt reimbursed The cst is reasnable Yu paid the expense in a mnth that yu received earned incme r perfrmed wrk while yu used the impairment related item r service The cst may be pr-rated ver a 12-mnth perid fr nnrecurring expenses Examples: expendable medical supplies, vitamin supplements, service animal

8 Slide 18 Impairment Related Wrk Expenses (IRWE) All Impairment Related Wrk Expenses must be verified by yur lcal Scial Security field ffice Prvide them with riginal receipts r canceled checks f the expenses Request in writing in case yu need t appeal Slide 19 Subsidy r Special Cnditins Subsidy: Supprt prvided by yur emplyer Special Cnditins: Supprt that is prvided by smene ther than yur emplyer (i.e., Department f Rehabilitatin, jb cach) As a result f this supprt, yu may be receiving mre pay than actual value f services yu perfrm Slide 20 Subsidy r Special Cnditins This may exist when: Yu require mre supervisin r help frm cwrkers Yu have a reduced prductin rate Yu are prvided with special equipment fr yur jb Yur have irregular wrk hurs and/r take frequent rest breaks Yu have a jb cach Yu have fewer jb duties than c-wrkers in a similar jb

9 Slide 21 Subsidy r Special Cnditins The value f these self-emplyment subsidies can be used as deductins frm cuntable incme: Unpaid help Help prvided by a relative r friend Example: Yu have a candy and magazine cunter in an ffice lbby, a friend helps yu restck the shelves ne hur each day Unincurred Business Expenses Agency r individual has prvided things yur business needs r pays fr certain expenses Examples: pays fr stck, rent, purchase f equipment, utilities Slide 22 SGA Example $ Grss Earnings 20% Subsidy = $ $50.00 IRWE $ $ $50.00=$ $ is less than $ = NOT SGA
