4 the peabody auditorium A Historical Cultural Landmark Since 1919, the Peabody Auditorium has been the preeminent regional cultural center. An international magnet for events in the arts, culture, and the humanities, The Peabody has played a key role in enriching the cultural and artistic life of Daytona Beach and Central Florida. Performances by Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Liza Minelli, Shirley MacLaine, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Bob Newhart, B.B. King, Tony Bennett, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, Louie Armstrong, Willie Nelson, David Copperfield, and the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as acclaimed Broadway productions including Cats, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, STOMP, Hair, Evita, Riverdance, The Producers, Chicago, Rent, and Spamalot have distinguished its first century. As we approach its Centennial celebration and the threshold of its second century, The Peabody will need to reflect the changing demographics and growth of the Daytona community. The vision for The Peabody is both bold and grand and will be part of the dynamic renaissance of our region.
5 Message from The Peabody Foundation There is one common thread that runs through our community: everyone has their favorite Peabody story. Whether it is a flashback to the concert by a young Elvis Presley, a beloved classical performance presented by the Daytona Beach Symphony Society, or the more recent Broadway in Daytona Beach series, the Peabody Auditorium has played a key role in enriching the cultural life of Daytona Beach and the surrounding region. Crafting the Future A Bold New Vision sets the stage for The Peabody Auditorium Foundation s multi-year plan to implement a new beginning for the historic Peabody. In 2019, The Peabody will witness both the 100th anniversary of the opening of the original wooden structure donated by Simon J. Peabody, and the 70th anniversary of the current 2,552 seat facility. While the auditorium has served as one of Florida s finest performance venues since reopening in 1949, it can no longer compete with more recently built or renovated performing arts centers. As with life, age has taken its toll, and the Peabody s ability to attract high-demand Broadway tours and concert performers has been hampered by the lack of up-to-date stage technology and adequate space requirements. Additionally, the aging venue lacks the ambiance to provide patrons with an optimal quality experience. Today, with the leadership and guidance of The Peabody Auditorium Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has been established. The Foundation s mission is to support the Peabody through advocacy and fundraising. A new chapter in the history of the Peabody has unfolded. Tomorrow s Peabody will be a product of our bold, new vision; a vision that paves the way for the Peabody to once again become an iconic performing arts center, a magnet for world class performances, a vibrant center for educational opportunities, a catalyst that stimulates economic development in the City s entertainment district, and a center of community pride. The Foundation, in cooperation with the City of Daytona Beach, has already begun laying the groundwork for crafting the Peabody s future, but to succeed; we must achieve key goals: 1. Create a platform for growth and financial stability. 2. Create fundraising strategies to drive the organization forward. 3. Create enhanced programming and skilled operations to improve the customer experience. 4. Create a realistic renaissance campaign to refresh and revitalize the aged facility. I welcome you to join me and The Peabody Auditorium Foundation Board of Directors as we work toward achieving our goals and objectives. With your support and our continued success, the Peabody will be positioned for a brighter future. Lloyd Bowers, President The Peabody Auditorium Foundation, Inc.
6 goal FINANCIAL STABILITY - A PLATFORM FOR GROWTH Fiscal stability is essential for the Peabody Auditorium to achieve its mission and to begin successfully its second century as a cultural icon for the Daytona community. Our goal is to place the Auditorium on a sound financial base through increased usage, membership, and sponsorship. Maintain and grow a positive operating margin Increase ticket sales Increase memberships and sponsorships Extend the the number of days of use goal FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING - A WAY FORWARD Our goal is to grow a culture of giving in support of the arts, entertainment and education centered at and manifested by the Peabody Auditorium. This Art of Giving is a fundamental underpinning for achieving the mission of the Peabody. Fund raising, endowment, and the role of the Foundation Board are essential in building a fund raising culture. Increase the size, general diversity, and involvement of the Foundation Board Develop a fund raising plan and strategy Create a Peabody endowment Create and adopt a long-term master plan goal ENHANCED PROGRAMS AND SKILLED OPERATIONS - AN IMPROVED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE The customer experience will define the success of the Peabody Auditorium. Without an outstanding customer experience, all else is superfluous. A wider range of programming, a broader offering of events, and a strong focus on a community events venue is key to a future of success for the Peabody Auditorium. Expand professional staffing Expand the range of programming Add weekend and matinee events to scheduling and increase the number of multi-day shows Add summer programming Make the Peabody the preferred venue for diverse community events
7 goal A REFRESHED AND REVITALIZED PEABODY AUDITORIUM THE PATH TO OUR SECOND CENTURY An enhanced customer experience depends also on a comfortable, up-to-date environment in which to enjoy the Peabody experience. There are immediate, improvements that can be made to the Auditorium that will result in an positive customer experience. A modern sound system, a performer-friendly stage floor, and customer facilities will add greatly to the Peabody experience. Procure a new sound system assessment, purchase, installation Refurbish interior wall and ceiling paint Install prominent electronic signage Replace existing stage floor Upgrade and expand restrooms Carry out a visioning and feasibility studies for The Peabody Centennial Renaissance Campaign Commission architectural renderings for The Peabody Centennial Renaissance Campaign goal THE CENTENNIAL RENAISSANCE OF THE PEABODY A BOLD, NEW VISION The Peabody Auditorium has been a community fixture for nearly a century. Looking to the next century, the Peabody will need to reflect the changing demographics and growth of the Daytona community. The vision of the Foundation Board for the Peabody is both bold and grand, and it is entirely appropriate for the iconic structure. Enlarge and modernize lobby Expand and modernize restrooms Expand facility to include a modernized second floor incorporating an additional lobby with concession facilities, restrooms, elevators, VIP lounge, and a catering kitchen Expand and modernize backstage facilities to include stage technical equipment and capabilities, dressing rooms, wardrobe room, green room, rehearsal halls, administrative and technical staff offices, and on-site storage Add a black box theater on the premises to allow the facility to sponsor shows for 500 people or less. Increase available parking by working with the City to construct a multilevel facility with the first floor dedicated to retail shops and restaurants
