3 WELCOME TO THE BURG! Welcome to my home, St. Petersburg, and the iconic Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club, the site of your Florida Bar Tax Section s Fall Meeting. We have a strong agenda for the Fall Meeting. I hope that you will join us. Before I turn to the Fall Meeting agenda summary, however, I wish to extend congratulations to a number of people resulting from our successful Organizational Meeting at Amelia Island. First, congratulations to Paul Fouche of Jacksonville, honoree of the Marvin C. Gutter Outstanding Public Service Award for Paul was nominated by Tax Section Director Harris Bonnette. Paul is a CPA and IRS Appeals William R. Lane, Jr., Chair Officer in Jacksonville. Harris describes him as pleasant, courteous, polite, and fair. Harris has long been impressed with Paul s willingness to listen carefully and thoughtfully consider taxpayers positions. Congratulations are in order also to Past Chair David Bowers, who is the honoree as the Gerald T. Hart Tax Attorney of the Year. David will be feted on May 6th, 2017 at the Section s Annual Meeting at The Breakers in Palm Beach. You will hear more of that event as the Section s year continues. Congratulations to Michael Minton, a partner in the Ft. Pierce office of Dean Mead, who is the Section s Chair-elect nominee. Michael will serve as Section Chair during the Bar s fiscal year. Last but not least, congratulations to Chair-elect Joe Schimmel and Section Director Mike O Leary, who teamed with their families to win the inaugural Tax Section Brain Bowl! Congratulations also to Section Directors French Brown and J.J. Wehle and past Chair Joel Maser and their families, who finished as silver and bronze medal winners, respectively. These section members and their families have very big brains! The Registration fees for the Fall Meeting are largely all inclusive, and will cover the member s cost of attending the Chair s Reception on Friday afternoon, and breakfast and lunch during the business meetings on Saturday. We also are providing an early-bird discount. The Fall Meeting begins with the Directors Committee convening on Thursday afternoon. A dinner will follow during which the Directors will host the Section s sponsor representatives. Our Section is fortunate to have loyal sponsors without whom we could not execute our meetings in great venues such as the Vinoy. Friday, October 14th promises an outstanding Advanced Level CLE program that will review income tax planning for family businesses and their constituents. The brochure for the CLE program is included within your meeting package. The faculty includes 4 former Chairs of the Tax Section. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to the attendees of the program, and for those who cannot attend in person the program will be offered through a simultaneous webcast. The Chair s Reception will follow the conclusion of the CLE program. Dinner on Friday evening will be on your own. The business meetings on Saturday will feature a presentation by former Tax Section Chair Richard O. Dick Jacobs during the State Tax Division meeting starting at 11 am. Dick has always been a leader of the profession given his ability to see over the horizon. His presentation will focus on the need to begin to study potential adjustments to the State of Florida s tax structure to accommodate the effects of sea level rise and its impact upon loss of oceanfront property. Dick s presentation should be thought-provoking and a call to action for the Section and for our academic partners in the State s graduate tax programs. During the Executive Council meeting Dick will make a brief follow-on presentation. A spouse/guest lunch will be held simultaneously with the Executive Council meeting. After the EC meeting concludes, you are invited to attend a private docent tour of The Salvador Dali Museum, a St. Petersburg landmark. The spouse/guest luncheon and the docent tour of the Dali are separately priced items on your Registration Form. Dinner Saturday evening will be on your own. Suggestions for downtown St. Petersburg restaurants for you to sample and enjoy over the weekend will be distributed to the registrants before the event.
