2 I. Main economicc indicators Monetary developments In August 2016, money supply registered a growth of Afl million to Afl. 4,175.0 million, compared to the previous month, resulting from an Afl million 1 increase in net domestic assets. Net foreign assets registered a slight decline of 0.1 million to Afl. 1, million. Money, as a component of broad money, expandedd by Afl million to Afl. 2,297.5 million, as demandd deposits registered a rise of Afl million, while currency in circulation marked a decrease of Afl. 1.5 million. The growth in demand deposits resulted from an expansion in deposits denominated in both Aruban florin and foreign currency of Afl million and Afl. 7.2 million, respectively. Quasi money felll by Afl million to Afl. 1,,877.5 million, as time deposits and savings deposits both denominated in Aruban florin recorded decreases of Afl million and Afl million, respectively. The growth in the domestic component of the money supply was the result of an Afl million increase in domestic credit and an Afl million decline in non resulted from expansions in shareholder rs' equity, borrowings, and other liabilities, and decreases in allocated provision for loan losses and accounts receivables and prepayments, as well as clearing transactions. credit related balance sheet items. i The latter 5.7 million) (Chart 1), whichh was largely offset by a decrease in consumer credit ( Afl. 4.8 million). The slight decrease in the net foreign assets of thee banking sector resulted from net sales of foreignn exchange of Afl million to the public, largelyy related to net payments for goods, other services, income, other investment, financial derivatives andd current transfers, which were completely counter balanced by net purchases of foreign exchange of Afl million from the public, mainly associated withh tourism, direct investment, transportation and net transfers from foreign accounts (Table A) ). The upsurge in net claims on the public sector resulted mainly from the drawing down of government deposits ( Afl million) and development funds ( Afl. 2.0 million). The rise in claims of the banking sector on the private sector was mostly due to an increase in housing mortgages (+Afl. 1 Excluding revaluation differences of gold and foreign exchange holdings. 3 Inflation The consumer price index (CPI) for August 2016 noted a 1.4 percent decrease year over year (YoY) (Chart 2). The contributors to this decrease weree mainly the component Housing, whichh was largely driven by a fall in electricity costs, and the component Transport, primarily due to a declinee in gasoline prices. In contrast, the components Clothing and Footwear and Restaurants and Hotels registered an increase. Excluding the effect of food and energy 2, the growth in the core CPI was 0.6 percent (YoY) (Table B). The 12 month average inflation rate was 0.99 percent in August 2016, compared to 0.8 percent in July 2016 (Chart 3). Tablee B. The decreases inn the Latin American market of 31.2 percent ( 13,6344 visitors) and in the North American market of 6.88 percent ( 3,802 visitors) contributed to thee contraction in stay over visitors. On the other hand, the European market registered an increase of percent (+1,348 visitors). Source: Central Bureau of Statisticss The decrease in the Latin American market was principally caused by a drop in visitors from Venezuelaa ( 14, 672 visitors or 39.9 percent). The decline in the North American market resultedd mainly from a 6.2 percent decrease in arrivals fromm the United States ( 3,342 visitors). In the month under review, total number of nights spent in Aruba, as indicated by the visitors, fell by 3.44 percent to 727,390 compared to the same month of the previous year. Source: Aruba Tourism Authority Government revenue In August 2016, total government revenue amounted to Afl million, which was Afl. 1.1 million lower than in the same month of the previous year. This downturn was mainly caused by a decline of Afl. 4.0 million in non tax revenue, which was somewhat offset by a rise of Afl. 2.9 million in tax revenue. The expansion in tax revenue was largely related to growths in transfer tax (+Afl. 2.2 million) ), excises on beer (+Afl. 1.5 million), import duties (+Afl. 1.2 million), profit tax (+Afl. 1.0 million) ), income tax (+Afl. 0.6 million), excises on tobaccoo (+Afl. 0.4 million) and liquor (+Afl. 0.4 million), while excises on gasoline remained unchanged at Afl. 4.8 million. On the other hand, decreases were registered in land tax ( Afl. 3.1 million), wage tax ( Afl. 0.5 million), turnover tax ( Afl. 0.5 million) and foreign exchange tax ( Afl. 0.2 million). II. Operations of the CBA On September 9, 2016, Afl. 20 million in three monthh treasury bills were issued at an average price of Afl per Afl nominal, yielding 0.40 percent on a yearly basis. The CBA assisted the government with the placement on September 27, 2016 of Afl million in 10 year 3
