2 ABOUT THE SURVEY This report is based on survey responses from 56 law firms who participated in Alliant s 2016 Law Firm Employee Benefits Benchmarking Survey. Data collection took place online between February 15 and May 1, Firms were asked to answer multiple choice questions and enter numeric data about their benefit plans. The survey collected the following information: Benefits Offered Eligibility Rules Contribution Strategies ACA Compliance Wellness Programs Medical, Dental and Vision Plan Data Grandfathered Status Funding Type Copayments, Coinsurance & Deductibles Maximum Out-of-Pocket & Lifetime Maximum Benefits Prescription Drug Coverage Infertility, Acupuncture, Chiropractic Mental Health & Substance Abuse Employer Premiums Employee Contributions (by class or income band) Life and Long-Term Disability Plans Results are made available on a restricted website that requires a password to access the survey data. Alliant shares the survey results with only the law firms that participated in the survey. Any other access to the survey data is prohibited. The survey and the data reports are the sole intellectual property of Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. The complete survey report is presented at alliantbenefits.com/ben/lawsurvey/reports.html. The data is segmented into a number of small reports reflecting various filters, including firm size, plan type (e.g., DHMO vs. DPPO), carrier (e.g., all HMO vs. non-kaiser HMO), and location where the plan is offered. The largest areas of concentration include California, New York and District of Columbia; however, we have added filtered reports for a significant number of other states based on the number of plans represented 2016 Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. 3 Statistical Operations Please read this section for an explanation of how the statistical data is presented within the reports. We have made certain decisions regarding which data to display for two reasons: (1) to reduce the length and overwhelming amount of data in the report; and (2) to provide the most useful responses, i.e., avoiding presenting outliers which are uncharacteristically high or low values or obvious responses such as a maximum of 100% plan coverage on a medical HMO plan. Data Integrity All survey data is self-reported by the participating firms and is un-audited in terms of accuracy. Alliant completed a high level review of survey entries and, where appropriate, adjusted data to reflect the requested data entry format; e.g., In-Network PPO Coinsurance (%) entry of 20% was adjusted to 80% to reflect the likelier response to the request for percent paid by the plan. In addition, text responses to numerical questions were deleted; e.g., a response of Unlimited or N/A to the question Maximum Number of Acupuncture Visits. Number of Responses (Firms vs. Plans) Firms completed the entire survey once; therefore, for certain questions as noted, the total number of responses listed per question indicates the number of firms responding Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. 4 In the Medical, Dental and Vision sections, firms were asked to complete the questions based on their Most Prevalent Plan offered at their firm; therefore, in those surveys, the total number of responses indicates the total number of plans entered. In these surveys, firms may have skipped questions that were not applicable to their plan. Because of this, the total number of responses may vary from option to option or from question to question. Number of Responses May Vary Based on Plan Design and Other Factors Traditional PPO and HDHP PPO High/Low Plan Pairs Based on our 2015 data we found that many firms were offering High/Low plan pairs in both Traditional PPO and HDHP categories. The plans are offered by firms as a pair in the same locations, where one plan would have richer benefits than the other option. We categorized the plans as High (higher deductible) plan and Low (lower deductible) plan. In order to provide more precise benchmarking, we collected data for these types of plans separately from the Most Prevalent Plan in both Traditional PPO and HDHP sections. Multiple Choice Questions Multiple choice questions will display the percentage and count of responses for each answer option. 5 Numerical Questions For numerical questions such as plan limits, premiums and contributions, we have presented the AVERAGE of all responses. The response Amount will not show a $ or % symbol; however the question or line item will show the applicable unit of measure. The total number of responses has been included to show whether there was a representative sampling. Firms can make an individual judgment as to whether or not they want to use the statistic for benchmarking. Sample Numerical Question Zero Values Calculations generally exclude zero values. For example, average values for contributions include only plans where the contribution is greater than $0; average deductibles are calculated only against plans which feature a deductible; etc Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. 6 Data Filters The data is segmented into a number of small reports reflecting various filters, including firm size, plan type (e.g., DHMO vs. DPPO), carrier (e.g., all HMO vs. non-kaiser HMO), and location where the plan is offered. Sample data filtered by firm size Filtered reports have also been created to represent the largest areas of concentration including multiple regions of California (LA/San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and All Regions), DC/Virginia, New York, Illinois and Texas. Additional locations may be represented where there are 5 or more plans represented. The following exhibit shows the header of a report filtered by where the plan is offered. The title of the report will show the plan, any sub-filters (such as DHMO, Traditional PPO, Non-Kaiser HMO, etc.) and the location filter. To gauge the number of responses (plans) within this sub-group, refer to the statistics in the Firm Size question. 7 HOW TO DOWNLOAD REPORTS Downloading PDF Documents While the reports are presented online, you may download them to create your own offline copy. To download the report data in PDF format, follow the steps below. Please note that your Internet browser and security settings may affect this process. These instructions were written using Google Chrome version 34. Consult your internal IT department if you are having difficulty downloading the PDF files. 1. Click on the red Adobe Acrobat icon in the top right corner of the screen. 2. When the PDF Export pop-up window appears, name your file to match the plan and data filter. Select Portrait orientation and Letter page size. Note: The Preview function is not recommended. 3. Click Export. The following window will appear: Please be patient.
